why is my back sore after lifting?

This can be a good sign if you are feeling some soreness after weight lifting. It means you were working out those muscles! If it is beyond soreness and is pain or if you feel tingling or numbness in your body, see a doctor since it may be a sign of something more serious.

Are you supposed to feel sore after weight lifting?

Usually yes. In the process of weight lifting, you are actually tearing/breaking down muscle tissue. The soreness you feel is related to how much tissue was broken down during your weight lifting session. This soreness can last for a day or two, or as long as a week. It all depends how much you lifted, and how intense your workout was. The old weight lifting saying goes " no pain, no gain", which is referring to the pain you feel after your workout.

How long should you be sore after lifting weights?

DOMS varies among different people. For some people, after doing exercises they're not used to, they can be sore for nearly a week. For most, 3 days is about the max. Don't be concerned unless soreness persists, and you should eventually be able to distinguish between soreness and injury.
