  • Born: 9 June 1963
  • Birthplace: Owensboro, Kentucky
  • Best Known As: Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies

Johnny Depp was first famous as a heartthrob cop on the teenybopper drama 21 Jump Street (1987-1990). Then he gave up TV for the movies, playing the fantastical title character in Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands (1990) and winning critical acclaim in What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993, co-starring Leonardo DiCaprio). Depp became known as a handsome and thoughtful actor who craved variety; In the 1990s he took a wide range of roles, from the lead in Don Juan DeMarco (1995, with Faye Dunaway and Marlon Brando) to Ichabod Crane in Burton's Sleepy Hollow (1999, with Christina Ricci). In 2001 he played real-life cocaine trafficker George Jung in the movie Blow (co-starring with Penelope Cruz), and he was a box office superstar as the comically swaggering pirate Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (co-starring Orlando Bloom) and its sequels (2003-07). That role earned him an Oscar nomination in 2004, and he followed up with another nomination for playing J.M. Barrie (the creator of Peter Pan) in Finding Neverland (2004). As if he hadn't wowed audiences enough, Depp sang in Burton's 2007 film Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and earned a third Oscar nomination for best actor.

Depp owns the Viper Room lounge in Los Angeles... He turned down the lead role in Speed (1994), which was then taken by Keanu Reeves... Pirates of the Caribbean was loosely based on the Disneyland thrill ride of the same name... Depp's longtime companion is French pop singer and actress Vanessa Paradis. They began dating in 1998 and have two children together: daughter Lily-Rose Melody Depp (b. 1999) and son John Christopher Depp III (also known as Jack, b. 2002).

Biography

Initially known as a teen idol thanks to his role on 21 Jump Street and tortured pretty-boy looks, Johnny Depp survived the perils of adolescent heartthrob status to earn a reputation as a respected adult actor. His numerous collaborations with director Tim Burton, as well as solid performances in a number of critically acclaimed films, have allowed Depp to carve a niche for himself as a serious, if idiosyncratic performer, a real-life role that has continuously surprised critics intent on writing him off as just another photogenic Tiger Beat casualty.

Born in Kentucky and raised in Florida,Depp had the kind of upbringing that would readily lend itself to his future portrayals of brooding lost boys. After his parents divorced when he was 16, he dropped out of school a year later in the hopes of making his way in the world as a musician. Depp fronted a series of garage bands; the most successful of these, The Kids, was once the opening act for Iggy Pop. During slack times in the music business, Depp sold pens by phone. He got introduced to acting after a visit to L.A. with his former wife, who introduced him to actor Nicolas Cage, who encouraged Depp to give it a try. The young actor made his film debut in 1984's A Nightmare on Elm Street (years after attaining stardom, Depp sentimentally played a cameo in the last of the Elm Street series), and his climb to fame was accelerated in 1987, when he replaced Jeff Yagher in the role of undercover cop Tommy Hanson in the Canadian-filmed TV series 21 Jump Street. Biding his time in "teen heartthrob" roles, Depp was first given a chance to exhibit his exhausting versatility in the title role of Tim Burton's fantasy Edward Scissorhands (1990).

Following the success of Edward Scissorhands, the actor made a conscious and successful effort never to repeat himself in his subsequent characterizations. He continued to gain critical acclaim and increasing popularity for his work, most notably in Benny & Joon (1993), in which he played a troubled young man who fancies himself the reincarnation of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, and What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), which cast him as its title character, a young man dissatisfied with the confines of his small-town life. Following Gilbert Grape, Depp outdid himself in Burton's Ed Wood (1994), with his outrageous but lovable portrayal of the angora-sweater-worshipping World's Worst Film Director. The same year, he further exercised his versatility playing a 19th century accountant in Dead Man, Jim Jarmusch's otherworldly Western. With his excellent portrayal of the titular undercover FBI agent in Mike Newell's 1997 Donnie Brasco, Depp continued to ascend the Hollywood ranks. After a starring turn as Hunter S. Thompson's alter ego in Terry Gilliam's trippy adaptation of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), Depp tried his hand at sci-fi horror with The Astronaut's Wife in 1999. That same year, he again collaborated with Burton on Sleepy Hollow, starring as a prim, driven Ichabod Crane in the remake of Washington Irving's classic tale of gothic terror. Appearing the following year in the small but popular romantic drama Chocolat, Depp jumped back into the big time with his role as real-life cocaine kingpin George Jung in Blow (2001) before gearing up for roles in the Jack the Ripper thriller From Hell (2001) and Robert Rodriguez's Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003).

In what was perhaps his most surprising departure since Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Depp shed his oftentimes angst-ridden persona for a role as flamboyant pirate Jack Sparrow in 2003's Pirates of the Caribbean. Essaying the crusty role in the manner of drunken, debauched rock star -- Depp publicly admitted Keith Richards was his inspiration -- the actor added a dose of off-kilter fun to an above-average summer thrill ride, and found himself with his biggest hit and first Oscar nomination ever.

By this point in his wildly varied career even Depp's most devoted fans would be hard pressed to speculate on the trajectory of his future career, and the only certainty seemed to be that whatever role he accepted, it would be chosen on his own terms. Shortly after making his maiden voyage into the horrific world of Stephen King with an amusingly disheveled performance in Secret Window, Depp warmed to a wider audience with another Oscar nominated performance as author J.M. Barrie in the critically acclaimed Finding Neverland. An tale of wonder based on the friendship that inspired Barrie to pen the classic tale Peter Pan, Finding Neverland earned nearly wide praise from audiences and critics alike. After once again re-teaming with director Burton for a both a vocal performance in the animated feature The Corpse Bride, and a role as mysterious candy magnate Willy Wonka in 2005, Depp reprised his popular role as Jack Sparrow in not one but two back-to-back Pirates of the Caribbean sequels - the first of which, entitled Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, shattered box office records. He also made plans to again work with Tim Burton, this time on an adaptation of Sweeney Todd, which was slated for release in 2007--a year that would also see the release of the third Pirates movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. Around this time Depp also began flexing his producing muscles, lending his talent in that capacity to both a big-screen adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's The Rum Diary, and the sweeping historical drama Shantaram.

In addition to his acting, Depp has also gained a certain dose of fame for his romantic involvements with several starlets and celebrities, including Winona Ryder, Sherilyn Fenn, and Kate Moss, and in 1999, fathered a daughter with French singer/actress Vanessa Paradis, as well as a son in 2002. He was also the owner of the Viper Room, a popular L.A. nightspot which gained notoriety when actor River Phoenix died of a drug overdose on its doorstep in 1993. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

John Christopher Depp II[1] (born June 9 1963) is an American actor.

Biography

Early life

Depp was born in Owensboro, Kentucky, to John Christopher Depp Sr., a city engineer, and Betty Sue (Wells), a waitress.[2] He has one brother, Danny, and two sisters, Christie (who was formerly Johnny's personal manager) and Debbie. Depp has German, Cherokee (from a great-grandmother), and Irish ancestry.[3] The book Johnny Depp: A Kind of Illusion (ISBN 1-905287-04-6) states that the Depp family originated with a French Huguenot Pierre Deppe or Dieppe who settled in Virginia around 1700. Depp has said he doesn't know the origin of his surname, but jokes that the name translates to "idiot" in German (it is actually a minor insult meaning fool or moron).[4][5] The family moved frequently during Depp's childhood, and he and his siblings lived in more than twenty different locations, settling in Miramar, Florida, in 1970, when he was 7. In 1978, when Johnny was 15, his parents were divorced. Depp engaged in self-harm as a child, due to the stress of dealing with family problems and his own insecurity. He has seven or eight scars from practicing self-harm. In a 1993 interview, he explained his self-injury by saying, "My body is a journal in a way. It's like what sailors used to do, where every tattoo meant something, a specific time in your life when you make a mark on yourself, whether you do it yourself with a knife or with a professional tattoo artist".[6] Depp married Lori Anne Allison, his makeup artist and sister of his band's drummer, on December 24 1983. During Depp's marriage his wife worked as a makeup artist while he worked a variety of odd jobs, including a telemarketer for ink pens. Later, his wife introduced him to actor Nicolas Cage, who advised Depp to pursue an acting career. In 1985, Depp and Allison divorced.

Rock band

Depp's mother bought him a guitar when he was twelve, and he began playing in garage bands. His first band was in honor of his girlfriend Meredith. One year after his parents divorced, he dropped out of high school to become a rock musician. (As he explained once on Inside the Actors Studio, he attempted to go back two weeks later, but the principal told him to follow his dream of being a musician, which Depp said was "really sweet.") He played with a band named "The Kids" which enjoyed modest local success. The band members set out together for Los Angeles in pursuit of a record deal, changing their name to "Six Gun Method." Depp's marriage caused friction between the band members, and the group split before signing a record deal. Depp subsequently collaborated with the band Rock City Angels[7] and co-wrote the song "Mary", which appeared on their debut for Geffen Records, "Young Man's Blues".

Television

Depp starred in a lead role on the FOX TV television series, 21 Jump Street, which premiered in 1987. Depp accepted this role because he wasn't getting much action in the business and he wanted to work with actor Frederic Forrest, who inspired him. Later in the season, Depp's long time friend Sal Jenco joined the cast as a semi-co-star as the janitor named Blowfish. The series' success turned Depp into a popular teen idol during the late 1980s. He found the teen-idol status an irritant, noting that he felt "forced into the role of product"[8] and that it was "a very uncomfortable situation and I didn't get a handle on it and it wasn't on my terms at all."[9] Depp promised himself that after his contract on the series expired, he would only appear in films that he felt were right for him.[8]

Film roles

Johnny Depp's first major role was in the 1984 horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street, playing the heroine's boyfriend and one of Freddy's victims. In 1986, he also appeared in a secondary role as a Vietnamese speaking private in Oliver Stone's Platoon.Johnny has since stated that he feels Platoon was the first 'proper' film he was in. Depp then left his teen idol image in 1990, after playing the quirky title role in the Tim Burton film, Edward Scissorhands. The film's success began a long association with Burton, as Depp starred in several of his films, including Ed Wood (1994), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) and Corpse Bride (2005). Depp, an avid fan and long-time friend of writer Hunter S. Thompson, played a version of Thompson (named Raoul Duke) in 1998's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, based on the writer's pseudobiographical novel of the same name. Depp also accompanied Thompson as his road manager on one of the author's last book tours.[10] In 2006, Depp contributed a touching and personal foreword to GONZO by Hunter S. Thompson, a posthumous visual biography of the writer's legacy published by ammobooks.com. A close friend of Thompson's, Depp paid for most of Thompson's memorial event, complete with fireworks and the shooting of Thompson's ashes by a cannon, in Aspen, Colorado, where Thompson lived.[11]

Depp's film characters have been described by the press as "iconic loners,"[12] and Depp has noted that this period of his career was full of "studio defined failures" and films that were "box office poison,"[13] stating that he believes film studios never "understood" the films he appeared in and did not know how to market them properly.[12] Depp has also said that he specifically chose to appear in films that he found personally interesting, rather than those he thought would succeed at the box office.[12]

Depp's status as a major star was solidified with the success of the 2003 Walt Disney Pictures film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,[12] for which his lead performance as the suave pirate Captain Jack Sparrow was highly praised. The performance was initially received negatively by the studio bosses who saw the film, but the character became popular with the movie-going public;[12] in 2006, Depp's co-star from the sequel to Pirates of the Caribbean, Bill Nighy, described the role as probably being "one of the most popular performances of recent times."[13] The film's director, Gore Verbinski, has said that Depp's Jack Sparrow character closely resembles Depp's own personality, although Depp himself said that he modelled the character after Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards.[14] Depp, who has noted that he was "surprised" and "touched" at the positive reception given to the film,[12] was nominated for an Academy Award for the role. In 2004, he was again nominated for a Best Actor Oscar, this time for playing Scottish author J. M. Barrie in the film Finding Neverland. Depp next starred as Willy Wonka in the 2005 film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which was a major success at the box office.[14]

Depp returned to the character of Jack Sparrow for the sequel Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, which opened on July 7 2006 and grossed $135.5 million in the first three days of its U.S. release, breaking a box office record in reaching the highest weekend tally ever.[15] The next sequel to Pirates of the Caribbean named At World's End was released May 24, 2007; Depp has mentioned his attachment to his Captain Jack Sparrow character, specifying that Sparrow is "definitely a big part of me," and expressing his desire to portray the character in further sequels.[16] Depp voiced Sparrow in the video game, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow.[17]

Depp and Gore Verbinski are executive producers of the album "Rogues Gallery, Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys".

Depp, as a child was obsessed with Dark Shadows. Warner Brothers pitched the idea of making another film to Johnny, and he accepted. In July 2007 a rights deal was closed with the estate of Dan Curtis , the producer/director who created the soap that aired weekdays on ABC, from 1966 to 1971. Depp and Graham King will produce with David Kennedy, who ran Dan Curtis Productions inc. until Curtis died in 2006 of a brain tumor. Infinitum-Nihil's Christi Dembrowski served as the point person on the deal.

It has been confirmed that he will portray Paul Kemp, the main character in a film version of writer Hunter S. Thompson's book, The Rum Diary.[10] Johnny Depp will next play the title role of Sweeney Todd in Tim Burton's film adaptation of the musical Sweeney Todd.[18] Depp's production company has picked up the rights to the story of poisoned former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko.[19]

Personal life

After his first marriage with Lori Anne Allison ended, Depp dated and was engaged to Sherilyn Fenn (whom he met on the set of the 1985 short film Dummies). He has also dated Winona Ryder, Jennifer Grey, and Kate Moss. Since 1998, Depp has been involved with Vanessa Paradis, a French actress and singer whom he met while filming The Ninth Gate.[20] The couple have two children. Daughter Lily-Rose Melody Depp was born May 27, 1999. In 2007, she recovered from a very serious illness, an E. coli bacteria infection that began to cause her kidneys to shut down and resulted in an extended hospital stay.[21] However, earlier sources reported that she had blood poisoning due to stepping on a rusty tack.[22] Son John "Jack" Christopher Depp III was born April 9, 2002. Johnny is not currently married, and notes that having children has given him "real foundation, a real strong place to stand in life, in work, in everything."[16] "You can't plan the kind of deep love that results in children. Fatherhood was not a conscious decision. It was part of the wonderful ride I was on. It was destiny; kismet. All the math finally worked." The family divides its time between Los Angeles and a villa in France.[23]

Depp also owns a 45-acre island in the Bahamas, where he spends some of his time. He said on the Late Show with David Letterman that Marlon Brando advised him on how to evaluate and successfully purchase the island.[24] Depp co-starred with Brando in the film Don Juan DeMarco, one of Brando's last films.

One of Depp's closest friends is director Tim Burton, with whom he has worked six times to date. He has referred to working with Burton as "coming home," and he wrote the introduction to Burton on Burton, a book of interviews with the director:

"What more can I say about him? He is a brother, a friend, my godson's father. He is a unique and brave soul, someone that I would go to the ends of the earth for, and I know, full and well, he would do the same for me."

In 2003, Depp was quoted as criticizing the United States in Germany's Stern magazine, commenting that "America is dumb, is something like a dumb puppy that has big teeth — that can bite and hurt you, aggressive."[23] Although he later asserted that the magazine misquoted him and the quotation was taken out of context, Stern stood by its story, as did CNN.com in its coverage of the interview. CNN added his remark that he would like his children "to see America as a toy, a broken toy. Investigate it a little, check it out, get this feeling and then get out." The July 17 2006 edition of Newsweek reprinted the "dumb puppy" quotation, verbatim, within the context of a Letter to the Magazine. Depp has also disagreed with subsequent media reports that he says to paint him as a "European wannabe" who enjoys the "simpler" life and anonymity that living in France provides.[23]

Depp has been arrested several times, with his first arrest in Vancouver B.C. for a late-night altercation in a hotel lobby. He was accused of allowing the sale of illegal drugs in his club The Viper Room after actor River Phoenix died of a speedball overdose in front of the club in 1993, despite the fact that the owners were not held responsible for the death. In 1994, Depp was arrested and questioned by police for allegedly causing serious damage to a New York City hotel suite. He was arrested again in 1999 for fighting with paparazzi outside a restaurant while dining in London with his girlfriend, Vanessa Paradis. Depp dislikes fans taking pictures of his family and has threatened paparazzi who have attempted to photograph his children.

In May 2006, Autograph Collector Magazine published its list of 10 Best & 10 Worst Hollywood Signers, with Depp topping the list of Best Signers.[25]

Depp, a musician, is a keen guitar player. He is a fan of The Rolling Stones and the Gypsy musical group Taraf de Haidouks with whom he is friends. Another friend is singer, songwriter, and guitarist John Frusciante, whom Depp encouraged to record his first solo album after leaving the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He produced a mini-documentary called Stuff about Frusciante's life. He is friends with Marilyn Manson. Known to be a fan of the band Deadsy, Depp can be seen wearing a wristband with the band's logo in a segment on the Fear and Loathing DVD. He played slide guitar on the Oasis song "Fade In-Out" (from Be Here Now, 1997), as well on "Fade Away (Warchild Version)" (b-side of the "Don't Go Away" single). He played acoustic guitar in the movie Chocolat and on the soundtrack to Once Upon a Time in Mexico (he wrote "Sands' Theme", although the track is credited to "Tonto's Giant Nuts"). He performed on his long time friend Shane MacGowan's (Of The Pogues) first solo album and was a member of P, a group featuring Butthole Surfers singer Gibby Haynes and Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea. Additionally, he has appeared in the music videos of several artists, most notably Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers' "Into the Great Wide Open".

Along with Sean Penn, John Malkovich and Mick Hucknall, Depp co-owns the Parisian restaurant-bar Man Ray.

He has thirteen tattoos, including an American Indian in profile and a ribbon reading "Wino Forever" (originally "Winona Forever", but altered after his breakup with Winona Ryder) on his right bicep, "Lily-Rose" (the name of his first-born child) over his heart, "Betty Sue" (his mother's name) on his left bicep, and a sparrow flying over water with the word "Jack" (his son's name; the sparrow is flying towards him rather than away from him as it is in Pirates of the Caribbean) on his right forearm.

Fans have noted that the actor Skeet Ulrich bears a resemblance to Depp. At the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards, Chris Rock jokingly introduced Depp as "the rich man's Skeet Ulrich."
