There were probably several notable political achievements of Harry Truman. He first came to the attention of the nation when he headed a congressional committee investigating government waste during World War II. That attention convinced FDR to make Truman his running mate in 1944. While having little executive experience, he proved a remarkably capable chief executive, educating himself on domestic and foreign affairs. FDR had left Truman out of his inner circle and, for instance, Truman did not even know about the development of the Manhattan Project until he became President. Truman successfully ended the war in Europe and Japan and stood up to the Soviets by creating the Truman Doctrine. He also approved the Marshall Plan which was one of the most successful foreign relations accomplishment in history. Truman was convinced that by standing up to the Soviets he had saved the world from another war and stopped the spread of communism. At home, he continued the New Deal programs of FDR (called the Fair Deal during his term) and made progress on Civil Rights by integrating the armed forces. His eulogy was, "He did his damndest."
