I have a similar, but not identical problem. I'll describe it then share 2 replies I found to other similar, but not identical problems, which might help you. If you or anyone else who reads this could help me, I would appreciate it. My 98 Blazer has just started having problems switching from 4-wheel hi to 2-wheel drive while driving. When I push the 2-wheel button, it continues in 4-wheel drive for another minute or so until it switches. When it does, there is a jolt and a noise that feels and sounds just like I hit a pothole. In fact, that's what I thought had happened the first few times this occurred. After this jolt, the 2-wheel drive is engaged. I've tried stopping and putting it in park before switching and, although this did work some of the time, it did not every time. Another thing is that, during the minute or two it takes to switch, the truck will tug slightly to the right. Just like it would if it was slightly out of alignment. However, after it switches, the tugging stops. Here are the 2 things I found that people said about similar problems. Problem 1999 Chevrolet Blazer has the electronic transfer case. It will not shift out of 4HI, back to 2HI. I push the button, the light flashes, and I hear some "clicking" from around the front wheels, but it stays in 4HI. Answer Your problem is common and is caused by a faulty actuator. Replacing it should get your 4-wheel drive system working again. Problem I have a 98 Blazer. A few months back, my 4 wheel drive would engage while I was driving in 2 wheel drive, but it caused a loud grinding or clicking noise. But when pushing the 4 wheel drive button, the clicking would stop. I'm thinking that the 4 wheel was not fully engaged, caught between 2 and 4. Anyway, the other day, I tried using my 4 wheel drive and I heard the shafts engage but there was no 4x4 at all. Could I have damaged the transfer case or wiped out the splines on the CV joints? How do I fix it and what do you think it will cost? Reply It sounds like the Transfer Case needs service badly. Based on a similar experience, I suggest taking it to a tranny shop and having the forks/bushings replaced. My Blazer probably has only about 10-15 hours on the 4WD system. Yet the forks inside the Transfer Case were badly worn and were allowing my gears to float. This produced symptoms like yours describe (among others). It seems this is a design flaw from GM and has apparently been "updated." My forks/bushings were replaced with the updated parts. So, we'll see.
