Hard Shifting is a good indicater that you need to have it serviced. Pull the dipstick and get the Fluid on your fingers then rub it round a bit and smell it. If it smells burn replace A.S.A.P. Here a [http://www.nationaltransmission.ca/pdf/Reading_Fluids.pdf Printable Document] I found on the subject. Good Luck and Remember.

THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM ON THE GM TRANS WHICH IS A BROKEN 1-2 ACCUMULATOR SPRING
super hard shifts
speeodmeter quit abs lights on transmission shifts hard
my 98 vw jetta atuo shifts hard in first but fine in 2,3
The synchronizing gears don't seem to be meshing right in the transmission. If the transmission is full of fluid then it will need to be taken apart to find the problem.
Mine has the same problem. The transmission guy said not to worry about it.
First thing to check is your fluid
Check on the bottom side of the transmission for a plug that may have came unplugged. It will make it shift really hard if it is unplugged.
Perhaps transmission fluid is "breaking down" at high temp. Try changing fluid and filter
A hard shift isn't always hard on a transmission. When a transmission shifts soft, it has to slip clutches and bands which causes the friction material to wear out faster. But if this concerns you, have the transmission vacuum modulator valve and vacuum line inspected as this controls the shift firmness.
It could be the source of hard shifts. In an electronically controlled transmission many sensor inputs determine shift times and firmness. If the back pressure of the exhaust is reintroduced through the exhaust gas recovery (EGR) valve to the intake then the power control module (the car's "computer") may interpret this as heavy engine load and raise the transmission line pressure to protect the transmission from slipping. This will be felt as hard shifts.
When was the last time you changed your transmission fluid? As the fluid gets older, transmissions start to shift harder, and you notice the shifts from gear to gear a lot more. It could also mean that your transmission needs repair.
