Check the coolant expansion tank (reservoir), a white plastic tank on the left engine compartment, most likely behind the wiper fluid container, above the passenger tire wheel well. Check coolant levels. If there is proper coolant levels, then there isn't any leaks. The indicator light blinks and the car over heats then it is most likely your water pump. Lucky for you, Saturn builds good cars with easy accessibility. Get a Haynes repair manual. It'll tell you how to test your water pump and remove and install it. I used it to replace the water pump on my 1994 SL1 for the same problem you are having. Good luck.
Check coolant level in RADIATOR when cold When light is blinking turn on heat and see if you have any. If no heat good indication that thermostat is stuck in closed position and needs to be replaced
If you are talking about the low coolant light then it is just low of coolant. Add coolant to the recovery tank. If you are talking about the coolant temperature light, then the engine is overheating. You may need to have the cooling system serviced. Drain the coolant and flush the system. Install a new thermostat, and add a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water.

genarally needs topping up with water ?????
The engine coolant temperature sensor is usually on the front of the engine. The coolant temperature sensor will be in the vicinity of the thermostat housing.
Low coolant level in the expansion tank.
Coolant temp sensors are typically somewhere on the intake or on the cylinder heads. They have no more than 2 wires going to them, most of the time only one.
To monitor the temperature of the engine coolant.
Coolant temperature sensor is located on the front of the engine. The coolant temperature sensor is a few inches above the thermostat housing.
You should get that checked out of a mechanic because that might mean your car is over heating. Check your Coolant or Antifreeze level.
