if it's a Canada model, it's the daytime running lights relay, if us model, then check headlamp relay located in underhood fuse box (also that's where drl relay is)
Possible ground issue at the taillights.

The burning smell indicates a short in the electrical system somewhere. I would start by replacing the headlight switch. If that does not work you will have to have a mechanic look at it.
