There is a shifter lockout solenoid in the console that is activated by the brake light switch. Check to see if your brake lights work. If they don't, you probably have a bad brake light switch, or a broken wire at the barke light switch connector. If they do, then you might have a problem with the shifter lockout solenoid itself. I have seen a lot of those go bad because of a build up of syrup from spilled sodas in the cup holder over the years.
If the brake light fuse is blown your transmission will not shift out of park.

Yes, check it on a level surface with the engine running and the gear shift selector in neutral or park. Check it after the engine has warmed up.
The shift interlock release is on the side of the console. Take the plug out and insert a key into the opening. Then, shift out of park and start the car.
Shift linkage out of adjustment?
It's the brake switch. It tells your break lights to come on.
Check with vehicle on level ground Engine at normal operating temperature Start @ park Shift to Reverse Shift to Neutral Shift to Drive Shift to Low Shift to park Then check Level on dipstick DO NOT OVERFILL
Does it shift out of Park?If not check stop light fuse - shift interlock and stop lights are a common circuit If it does shift out of Park then shift linkage may need adjustment Try turning key to first position (Unlock) without engine running and the shift to neutral to start vehicle and then shift to Drive
Put your foot on the brake.
Check to see if your brake lights work. The brakes have to be pushed to get it out of park. If the brake lights don't work check the switch at the pedal. If the brake lights work the problem is with the shift interlock mechanism. There is a slot in the console with a plug in it. Take the plug out and insert a small screwdriver. This will allow you to shift out of park. To fix the shift interlock you must take the console off. The shift interlock is about $37 and easy to replace.
Stop light Switch is bad...costs about 6 bucks to replace it....its on the brake pedal itself
If your gear shift is locked into park, but the car stars and won't go into reverse, try unlocking the steering wheel. Turn the wheel back and forth to see if it remedies the problem.
Rev the engine slightly to see if it will keep running. If it does, then check for a possible vacuum leak. There could be a leak that gets worse when the transmission is shifted into gear.
