The removal of the dash is required for evaporator replacement also while the evaporator case is out, the inspection of the composite doors is recommended. There is a good article on Jeep Grand Cherokees that covers actuators, doors and removal procedure at DenLorsTools.com, the link is on the left column.

You need to pull the dash, steering column, center console, and HVAC box to get to the AC evaporator. The instructions to do this can be found on the www.wjjeeps.com website - search for HVAC. The AC system needs to be evacuated, and re-charged when the job is done. I found a company that would do this part of the job for $60. The job takes about a weekend, and the dash requires a helper for about 15 minutes to lift it off ( and put it back onto ) it's mounting studs. You'll need to disconnect the heater hoses ( if they need replacing - just cut them near the heater and replace) which is one of the tougher parts of the job. You'll also need to pull most of the equipment in the right fender well just to get to the heater hoses ( battery, evaporation bottle, trans computer, PCM). If you're handy and have a helper for occassional tough parts its not too bad. Have your 10mm and 13mm deep sockets, 10mm ratchet wrench, and portable lights.
