As a US citizen if you marry a British citizen and the marriage takes place in England do you have to file in both countries if you want to divorce your resident alien wife?

you only need to file in the country in which you are normally resident.
If you live in the USA, you file in the USA.
I am American, got married in the UK and divorced in Australia. You may need to fill certain criteria to be eligible for divorce (ie I had to be in Australia for 1 year before filing in Australia) but a lawyer will be able to help.
