Both are indications of trouble within the braking system. That's what warning lights are for. You will need to take the vehicle to a shop or the dealer to get the problem diagnosed.

Two plastic pads on the brake pedal which press on two switches on a bracket are missing. Meaning the switches never get pressed and the brake lights stay on and run down the battery. See a dealer to put new plastic "buttons" in the pedal.

It could be a lot of different things. I would check the idle speed unless it's computer controlled. If the idle speed is computer controlled you can't adjust it and it probably isn't the problem anyway.

Under the brake pedal is a brake light switch that when you press the pedal it hits it and makes your lights come on..sometimes when they get weak the pedal depresses them simply from the weight of the pedal and they stay on..Have a friend get inside the truck and pull UP on the brake pedal as you look at the lights..if the brake lights go off when they pull up on it..then it is that switch under the brake pedal

More information needed: What make model vehicle is it? Early VW'S had a pressure operated brake light switch that was on the master cylinder. When you pressed the pedal the pressure would cause the switch contacts to close; lighting the brake lights. Haven't see one of them in a loooooong time!
