Browser: a Web Browser is a program or piece of software which enables a person to easily access the internet and surf to various ip addresses and websites (WWW). There are many different browsers, some popular ones are called Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari and Google Chrome.

FTP: "File Transfer Protocol" is the most common method of transferring files between computers via the Internet. They can be shared through hosts such as rapidshare.com or through programs such as Utorrent or Filezilla.

World Wide Web: This is largest, fastest growing, part of the Internet, the part for which Internet browsers like Netscape's Navigator and Microsoft's Explorer were designed. Business is the leading factor fueling the rapid growth of the Web making information, advertising, and product ordering readily available to everyone with Web access.

Chat: IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is used for live discussions on the Internet. Some programs include MSN and Skype.

Search Engines: These tools are really a part of the World Wide Web and are often used when looking for information because the Web has grown so large and is without any inherent organizational structure. e.g. Google

  1. Devices: the hardware that generates physical signals, interprets them, and sends them along the right transmission medium to get to their destination.
  2. Transmission media: the means by which signals are sent from one place to another.
  3. Software: the internal instructions used by computers to do their job correctly.
  4. Protocols: the standard "language" for messages from one device to another for requesting services and replying to the requests. Protocols are not discussed (directly) in this module, but are touched on in several others, including:
