How do airports ensure that runways are safe to takeoff and land on?

How do you land a plane when the engine fails?

Airplanes do not just drop out of the sky and crash when an engine fails. The airplane WILL come down, but the pilot still has control and the airplane can glide for some distance before it has to touch down. If there is an open field or relatively smooth place where the pilot can put his aircraft down, it may be possible to land the airplane safely and without injuring passengers or people on the ground.

Can airplanes fly without a pilot?

Yes. Especially now that modern airplanes have auto-pilots that fly the plane without the pilot holding the controls. A few years ago, there was a famous golfer who died when he and the pilot died in the plane due to poor oxygen system. The plane continued to fly and almost reached Canada before it ran out of fuel and crashed. [[Addition to original answer]] Planes CAN fly without pilots while in the air, but they have not yet been mastered to fly without pilots completely. There have been many attempts to create aircraft that are able to take-off and land on their own, but they have all seen their own problems. Most Auto-Pilot systems in present day are programmed to disengage themselves at about 500 feet AGL.
