No, Turning the overdrive off will only cause the rpms of your vehicle to be higher. Typically you would turn overdrive off when you need more power and aren't worried about your fuel economy. Overdrive is really just used to improve fuel economy as it causes the engine rpms to lower, reducing the amount of fuel used. Turning off the OD won't mess up your tranny. Just don't do it too much, or you're gonna go broke paying for gasoline

How do you stop a ford explorer Flashing overdrive off light?

When the overdrive off light flashes it means the powertrain control module has "received" information of a transmission problem. Take it in to the dealer or other transmission repair professional, continuing to drive with the O/D OFF light flashing can result in damage to the transmission.

Should Ford expedition 2001 overdrive be on or off while driving on the street and freeway?

Overdrive is the normally allowed position It won't shift into overdrive until the speed is faster anyway ( on my Ford EXPLORER I have to be doing around 50 miles per hour ) If you are towing something or driving in hilly country where the transmission is constantly down shifting then you want to turn the overdrive off and the OFF light will appear in the end of your gear selector lever

It's a button on the shifter that you pressed by accident. OVERDRIVE OFF. Used for hilly driving.

Is it better to drive with overdrive on or off in a 2002 Dodge Durango?

As with most overdrive-equipped vehicles, the most potential for damage is when the transmission is frequently shifting into, and out of, overdrive. This would most likely occur during some city driving, winding rural roads, or hilly areas with a lot of transitions from uphill to downhill, and visa-versa. Unless you notice it kicking into and out of overdrive often, it's probably not a problem to leave it on.

2001 ford expedition overdrive light should it be on while driving or off?

Normally the overdrive is allowed , so the overdrive OFF light does not light up When the overdrive is switched off , the overdrive OFF light will light up to let you know that the overdrive has been switched off

How do you use overdrive in a car with an automatic transmission?

Generally speaking, overdrive (O/D) is the highest gear in the transmission. On most cars the automatic transmission has 3 speeds and Overdrive (forth speed). Overdrive allows the engine to have less rpm with higher speed in order to have better fuel efficiency. When you switch it on, you allow the transmission to shift into overdrive mode after the certain speed is reached (usually 30 - 40 mph depending on the load). When it's off, you limit transmission shifting by third speed. In normal driving condition the overdrive should be always on.You may need to switch it off when driving in mountainous area or towing a trailer.[The automatic transmission automatically shifts from OD to the 3-th gear when it feel more load. When it feels less load it shifts back to the O/D, but under certain conditions, e.g: driving uphill or towing a trailer, the transmission can not decide to stay in OD or to shift into 3-th speed and it starts to shift back and forth. That's the time you may switch it off and help the transmission to decide.] .You also may need to switch it off when you want to slowdown using the engine braking, for example, driving downhill.
