According to the organization created to teach the TM technique, the practice can be properly learned only from a certified instructor. It is claimed that 'Transcendental Meditation' and 'TM' are trademarked but not patented. The organization claims that no one except a certified instructor can legally teach it. There is a tuition to enroll in the TM course in the organization. Others claim because it is not patented that the technique itself can be taught free of charge without the trademarked names.

We will not be focusing on the meaning of I AM during meditation. No doubt it has sacred meaning in the Judeo/Christian tradition in particular,

and also bears similarity to the sacred sounds of other traditions. It is the sound we are interested in, not the meaning. It is the sound we

will be using, within. We are after the profound vibratory quality of the sound when it is used effectively deep inside the mind and nervous

system. Perhaps these profound effects inside the human being are the reason why I AM has been revered for centuries. What we will be doing is

focusing on the correct utilization of the mantra in the practice of meditation. Then we will have the best results.

Why do you have pay for instruction in Transcendental Meditation if it is effortless?

There are many things in life that are easy, effortless and natural. These would include walking, speaking, sleeping, running etc. Yet all of us need training and coaching in these areas. Parents teach their children to walk, speak etc. Those with sleeping difficulties get therapy. Those that want to excel in running get lessons and coaching. In an enlightened society meditation is also taught by parent to their children. However, in today's material world few parents are not experts in Transcendental Meditation and cannot teach it to their children. This is true even in India where Transcendental Meditation has its roots. So we must enroll in a course and get proper training from a certified Transcendental Meditation teacher. Because these teachers teach meditation as an occupation they must be compensated so they can buy food and pay rent just like any other professional who has invested thousands of dollars in extensive training and certifications programs.

How much does it cost to learn transcendental meditation?

Currently in the US the Transcendental Meditation technique costs around $1500 to learn from a qualified teacher. It is taught over 3 consecutive days for about 1-2 hours per day. Then there are weekly and monthly personal checking sessions to ensure that you are practicing the technique properly. As a course graduate you are eligible for free checking of your practice any time any where in the world.

Why does transcendental meditation have to be taught by a teacher?

When a person learns the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique they are instructed by a certified TM teacher and they get lots of personal, one on one, attention. This is really valuable because everyone is different and learns at their own pace. An experienced TM teacher can guide you through every step and assure that you learn the technique correctly and gain all of the benefit. Many people wonder: why can't I learn Transcendental Meditation from a book or a CD? Well imagine trying to learn a golf swing from just a verbal description in a book or on a recording. It just doesn't work. In fact you could develop bad habits that would hurt your golf game and be difficult to correct later. But a one on one session with a golf pro, well now you're learning! A teacher gives you feedback at each step so you can correct yourself and maximize the learning process. At the same time getting feedback when you practice correctly also helps you to grow in confidence and then meditate successfully on your own at home. The TM technique is unique among the many forms of meditation available today. It's natural, effortless and anyone can learn. It does not involve any kind of concentration, lifestyle or belief. But it is a delicate process so learning from a TM teacher is crucial. It's a lot easier than playing the guitar or perfecting your golf swing, but at the same time requires that same kind of personalized guidance.Transcendental Meditation (www.tm.org) differs from other meditation methods in that it teaches the mind to move beyond thinking to the source of thought, pure consciousness. To learn the Transcendental Mediation technique, I suggest you contact your local TM center (or call 888-LEARN-TM) and speak to a certified meditation instructor. Learn about the seven-step, 10-12 hours of training you get during the TM course and the careful personalized instruction you receive. Learn about the one-on-one follow-up-a lifetime of personal guidance, as needed-and the optional, ongoing advanced classes and group meditations at TM centers. Maharishi created a wealth of knowledge and clarification to ensure that your understanding can grow as your experience deepens. All of this follow-up is available to you for the rest of your life when you learn the TM technique-at no further charge after you've completed the initial seven-step course. And learn about the gift of scholarships and grants for people in financial need, to help pay for such comprehensive training. There is significant financial help available so that everyone who wants to can learn The Transcendental Meditation Technique.Maharishi, the founder of the TM program, spent over 50 years elucidating the principles behind the Transcendental Meditation technique, always emphasizing the need for personal, one-on-one instruction:"By necessity, the practice of Transcendental Meditation is imparted by personal instruction. It cannot be done through a book [or CD or online training] because it not only involves telling an aspirant how to experience the subtle states of thinking, but an even greater responsibility lies in finding out what the aspirant experiences when he proceeds on that path… The experiences on the path of Transcendental Meditation are very subtle… It takes a while for the beginner to be able to pinpoint his experiences of the subtle state of thought. The practice of Transcendental Meditation must always be given by the expert teachers of Transcendental Meditation who have been properly trained to give it and who have been trained to check the experiences."The checking of experiences is a vital point in the practice of Transcendental Meditation. Again, it cannot be done through books…by nature it is delicate and therefore highly technical. But under personal instruction and guidance the way is smooth and easy." [Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, The Science of Being and Art of Living (New York: Plume/Penguine Group, 1963/2001), p. 35-36]It is important to note that there are alternatives to Transcendental Meditation for those who cannot afford it or believe it is religious. An example is NSR Meditation (www.nsrusa.org), which is different from TM and can indeed be learned successfully by anyone from a manual. TM and NSR are taught by two different but nonprofit organizations.

Are there free lessons for learning the Transcendental Meditation technique?

It is claimed that both "TM" and "Transcendental Meditation" are registered trademarks of the Maharishi Vedic Education Development Corporation and that no one can legally claim to be teaching "TM" unless authorized to use the trademark. No authorized TM teacher will teach you for anything less than the official fee of $2500. However, it is further claimed that a "copyright" is not a "patent". For example, anyone can market sodium hypoclorite as long as they don't call it "Clorox". And anyone can teach the exact same technique as the TM teachers do as long as they don't label it "TM" or "Transcendental Meditation". There are a number of renegade teachers who will teach you everything you would learn from an official TM teacher, either for free or for cheap, but you would need to find one locally.

How do Buddhists devote their lives to Buddhism?

The only correct way to devote your life to the Buddha is to follow what he taught. He taught a practical meditation technique called Vipassana Meditation to experience the impermanence of everything including you -- meaning your body and the mind. This is the crux of his teaching. You are fortunate that you can learn this technique by joining a ten day residential Vipassana Course. These courses are conducted across the globe without any fee. All expenses are borne by the meditators who have learned this skill in the past. If you have "experienced" impermanence inside you and lead a life staying with this feeling, you are actually following what the Buddha wanted you to learn. Reading Tipitakas or worshiping an idol of Buddha is fine for inspiration, but practice the technique rediscovered and taught by him. Google search for "Vipassana" will show the places near to you where you can join the course. The headquarters of Vipassana International Academy is in India at Igatpuri near Mumbai.

Do monks lead the meditation?

Buddhist monks practices are a way of showing devotion to the Buddha through ceremonies, festivals, different types of meditation and retreats. Buddhist practices include rituals - a visual way for Buddhists to demonstrate their beliefs. Meditation is essential in Buddhism. Therefore, in order to achieve enlightenment, Buddhists must know how to meditate properly. There are two main kinds of meditation: Samatha meditation - This is known as calming meditation and Buddhists believe that it leads to deeper concentration. It is important as it allows Buddhists to let go of cravings and therefore achieve nibbana. It focuses on mindfulness of breathing. Vipassana meditation - This is known as insight meditation. When a Buddhist meditates, they believe that they can see things as they really are. This allows them to gain realisation and understand the impermanence of things and the nature of reality. It is not just about focusing on breathing - it is also about focusing on exploration. It can even be done when walking. For more check out cutt. ly/bxbbGQs (remove the space)

Is it possible for atheists to meditate?

Of course it is. I usually pause to meditate several times daily. Meditation can be a way to pause and gather one's thoughts, or even to clear one's mind of clutter. Meditation is not prayer, if it were I'd be talking to myself.

Did Native Americans meditate together?

Certainly, the drum circles have an element of meditation to them and the "peace pipe" ceremonies (as portrayed in the movies at least) have a deep sense of silence to them. Of course, the sweat lodge has a very strong element of meditation to it as well.
