But if you like the car and it looks and runs good know that it's worth roughly 40% less than a comparable clean titled car so you can also demand a partial refund and keep the car.
Lesson: always run a Carfax when buying used cars and if the car is titled locally, call the DMV up with the VIN or title number and have them run a check on the title since there can be lag time once a car is totaled and ultimately reported to state agencies. And always get a prepurchase inspection on any used car you buy!

You cant sell the vehicle without titling it in your name first unless you are selling it to a salvage yard or for scrap metal. The person buying it wont be able to get a title for it if you dont title it first.
