With Wilson's attempt to convince the American public that the United States should join the League of Nations and help try and prevent future world wars, the American public became increasingly concerned more with domestic issues and the materialism that became part of the Roaring Twenties. Many Americans felt that Harding was correct in claiming that the US demanded a return to "normalcy." Americans became less concerned with the affairs of Europe and more concerned about buying the latest gadget that appeared on store shelves as a result of American business development. The period of the Red Scare further convinced Americans that immigrants were anarchists and communists and should be sent back to their own country. There was an anti-foreign growth in American society. People became more concerned with working, obtaining more money, and enjoying the decade of the 20s. While trying to hide behind the belief that isolationist policy would protect us from the economic and revolutionary events in Europe, it did just the opposite. The Great Depression was a result of our not becoming more concerned with economic and foreign issues during the 20s.

The U.S.A. desperately wanted to stay out of World War 1 and believed that they should not get involved in any foreign dispute. However, unrestricted submarine warfare by the Germans, the sinking of the Lusitania by the Germans, and the Zimmerman telegraph that was intercepted by the allies and revealed a plot by Germany to get Mexico to attack the U.S. if the U.S. joined the war on the side of the allies. These factors caused the U.S. to enter the war, which proved decisive for victory for the allies.

Isolationism affected World War 1 when President Wilson went to the Versailles Conference. He was the first US President to ever visit Europe because the American citizens wanted to stay out of the wars.
