The Europeans planned to find different routes to Asia.

The Europeans' intent to find new routes to Asia was not about price-point, but about availability. Europe did not have access to enough salt and spices to satiate their appetites and so wished to acquire more.

Europeans decided, correctly, that they could get Asian goods cheaper if they could buy them directly. Therefore they sought a water route to Asia.
