* Because Italy realized that the Central Powers (the side that they originally were on) were losing, and Italy, not heavily invested in the causes behind the war, wished to gain the port city of Fiume, which was currently owned by Austria-Hungary. When it was evident that they would not receive Fiume by staying with the Central Powers, Italy joined forces with the Allies, who agreed that Italy could have Fiume, if she could capture it.

∙ 7y agoItaly didn't really switch sides. What happened was when World War I started, they were allied with Germany and Austria-Hungary. However, Austria-Hungary technically started the war when they declared war on Serbia (because Serbia was complicit in the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand). Because Austria-Hungary declared war first, Italy said that they were not obligated to join the war on their side. So they were officially neutral, and sat out the war for the first year or so.
It should be noted, however, that Italy never really liked Austria-Hungary. In the 1800s, while Italy was unifying into a single country instead of many small countries, Austria-Hungary opposed the movement, and even fought wars against the Italians. When World War I started, Austria-Hungary even controlled territory along the Adriatic Sea that Italians believed should be part of Italy. Italy only joined the alliance because they were afraid of France attacking them- but by 1914, Italy was no longer afraid of France.
In 1915, Italy joined the Allied Powers against Austria-Hungary and Germany. France and the UK had secretly promised to give Italy that territory that Austria-Hungary controlled and Italians wanted- so Italy agreed and joined.
