The British were pretty generally tolerant of the cultures of areas they colonised, Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism were all allowed to continue essentially unchecked in India. Of course missionaries came and tried to convert the populace but were largely unsuccessful but force was never used against the people of India, it was certainly used against the armies of Mysore and the Maratthas.

It is important to remember that for pretty much the whole of the 19th century the Empire was viewed as a civilizing force, not as a conquering oppressor, you don't civilize a people by making them hate you.
