After the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776 by John Hancock (the other delegates to Continental Congress signed later), Benjamin Franklin (and later John Adams) were sent to France as ambassadors. Their primary mission was to convince the French king (and his inner circle) to financially support the American Revolution. Franklin was considered a 'star' in France! His discoveries of electricity and the lightning rod were the talk of Europe, and he used his charming wit and 'star power' to negotiate the help of French troops and money. Most scholars agree that only Ben Franklin could have accomplished this goal and that John Adams' presence (and lack of understanding French culture) may have done more harm than good. The support of the French was vital to the Americans' victory over the British! - Brad Watson 5/28/09 10:33 MiamiWorldPerc@netzero.com

The first battles of the Revolutionary War were fought at Lexington and Concord in April 1775, between colonial militia and British Regular Army. To this day, no one knows which side fired the first shot on Lexington Green...but it came to be known as the Shot Heard 'Round the World. It was deemed an American victory since the British troops did not succeed in their efforts to seize arms and powder stored in the two towns outside Boston nor did they capture Samuel Adams and John Hancock, considered by the Red Coats to be ringleaders of the uprising. The British casualties were aggravated by the fact that as they withdrew to Boston the colonials sniped at them from rock walls and tree lines.

The first "conventional" battle was fought in Boston on Bunker Hill (actually Breed's Hill, since it was more defensible than its titular neighboring rise) in June 1775. British Regulars stormed ashore and after three charges swept the colonials from their redoubt. While victorious, the British casualties numbers 1000 to the colonials 450. George Washington took command of the American army two weeks later. Nine moths after that, in March 1776, he fortified Dorchester Heights to the southeast of Boston with artillery seized by Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold at New York's Fort Ticonderoga (and transported across the mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire by Henry Knox) and forced the British troops to withdraw from Boston entirely.

American troops invaded Canada in the fall of 1775 (hoping to bring the Canadians into revolt with them) and captured Montreal but were defeated at Quebec, retreating to the south. The Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge was fought not far from Wilimington, NC in February 1776 between the victorious colonists and a force of Loyalists, and Charleston beat off a Royal Navy assault in June.

The Declaration of Independence was not signed until July 4th, 1776. Quite the delay in getting the message out, I'd say.

The first battle (or battles) after the Declaration began on Long Island in August of that year, followed by the interconnected battles of Harlem Heights and White Plains. The British routed the American army and captured Manhattan, but Washington made a brilliant withdrawal into New Jersey by way of the Hudson River.
