"Goths", were members of a Germanic tribe that came from somewhere in northern Europe, probably Götaland (today South Sweden) during the Age of European Migration (which apparently began during the late Classical period, when the Roman Empire had not yet begun its transformation into the Christian Church of Europe and the Byzantine Church of Asia Minor) and which eventually split into two branches known as Ostrogoths or eastern Goths and Visigoths or western Goths.

The Ostrogoths (eastern Goths) conquered Italy and set up a kingdom on the remnants of the Western Roman empire which lasted until the mid-sixth century, when it was destroyed by resurgent Roman forces advancing from the east and temporarily bringing Italy under the rule of the Eastern emperor in Constantinople. The Visigoths (western Goths) took Spain from the Romans and a Visigothic kingdom existed there until 711, when it was attacked and obliterated by the Arab armies which had erupted out of Arabia following the death of Mohammed

Who are the visigoth?

The Visigoths were the western branch of the Goths. The Goths were original from Sweden and migrated through eastern Europe all the way to Ukraine. When the Huns invaded their land, some of the Goths asked the Roman emperor to allow them to settle in the lower Danube area of the Roman Empire to escape the Huns. This was granted. The rest of the Goths were conquered by the Huns and became their vassals. The Goths in the Roman Empire then came to be called Visigoths (Goths of the west) because at that point they lived further west than the other Goths. The other Goths came to be called Ostrogoths (Goths of the east).
