I had the same problem. It's the headlight switch. It needs to be replaced. You have to remove the dash for that, which is easy. The switch rins from $107.00 on the internet, to about $140.00 at the Chevy dealer.
I may be mistaken, but I don't think you can change the gauges. I think I recall seeing here, that you must replace the entire instrument cluster.
The gauges on the dash is the instrument cluster.
The instrument cluster is what houses the speedometer, and the gauges.
Did you replace it with the correct cluster ? the later ones are not compatible. You can replace the circuit board with a new one
We have full instruction on cluster removal and how to replace the stepper motors for the gauges. Use the search button "how to replace your stepper motors" www.trailvoy.com
The meter refers to gauges in the instrument cluster.
Nothing
Possibly could be the dimmer portion of the headlight switch. Wiggle the heck out of it with the headlights on and see if you can get them to come on.
Typically this is for the instrument cluster, i. e. the dash gauges.
it is most likely a burnt out fuse, or the whole instrument cluster is shot. that happened to my 2002 impala. all gauges froze, and nothing worked. I would check the fuse first before replacing the entire cluster. Best of luck
There are two primary causes for the entire instrument cluster to fail on a 1996 Pontiac Grand Am. The most likely is that an instrument cluster panel fuse has blown. One can also inspect to make sure the wiring harness and connectors to and from the cluster are intact and undamaged. If the problem is limited to the cluster itself there are services available that can repair and refurbish instrument clusters, often on an exchange basis.
