You need tools to remove them... which tools those are specifically depends on the make and model of the engine. The ones I remove are on large diesel engines which power Class 8 tractor-trailer units - probably not going to be the same set of tools you'd use on a passenger car or SUV.

Unfasten the bolts that attach the pump to the cylinder front cover. Remove the pump and gasket.
