Just draining the trans by removing the pan does *not* get all the trans fluid. Much of the fluid is actually held inside the torque converter.
A "flush" is intended to get it *all*, and is hard to do without specialized equipment.
Many experts state that regular filter changes - every 30,000 - will keep the fluids and the key ingredients *fresh*, even though it's not a complete fluid change.
