No they do not require you mess with them when new.

Is it a new starter motor? It may be incorrect.
Could be a short in the wiring of the actual starter motor!! The starter motor is the first piece of electrical equipment after the battery.

You need a manual to acquaint you with your car and tell you how it is done. Get one from DISCOUNTAUTOREPAIRMANUALS.COM. The manual with really help... but it isn't that difficult. The starter is located underneath the engine about in the middle. It's best if you hoist up the car and use jack stands for safety. Remove battery ground (negative terminal) cable. There are two 13mm bolts that hold the starter motor to the engine. You may need to remove an oxygen sensor if it's in your way. Otherwise, remove starter cable (red) from the starter motor and then remove two bolts. To install, repeat the following in reverse order. Torque specs on the starter motor bolts is 20-27 Nm (15-20 lb-ft), and starter motor cable 8-12.4 Nm (70-110 lb-in).
When the starter motor refuses to turn over or grinds and clicks when turning then you need a new motor or recondition the old one.
I am in South Africa and I just found out I need a new starter motor for me Peugeot 206cc. R3500 approx incl labour. WHAT! Is it this expensive in other countries?
this indicates that the spindle on the starter motor isn't engaing forwards properly, this can sometimes be easily reactified by removing the starter motor, and giving it a clean, small amount of grease and a good old tap with a lump hammer should reslove the problem. This is however not a permant fix and you will need to have the starter reconditioned or fit a new one completeley......................................!

u need a new ring gear or fly wheel and a nother starter!!! your starter might be staying ingaged in the motor while the motor is running? in this case replace the starter solidoid
need new starter. most starters fail under high temps, cast off from motor. starts when its cold and not when its hot you need a starter.
The starter motor on a Citrogen Berlingo can be changed by first removing the electrical wires. Remove the three bolts that hold the starter in place. The starter will come out. Reverse the process to install the new starter.

It depends if the starter is turning the engine over and its not starting the problem is not with the starter its with your ignition or fuel system most likely, If your start is making a whirring sound then its not making contact with the flywheel and you probably need a new starter
If you only hear a click sound and the motor is not turning then you either need a new starter or your battery cable that goes to the starter is loose.
To remove the starter motor, disconnect the battery first. Take a picture, if possible, so that the new starter can be put back in place the same as the old one was. Disconnect the wires and remove the starter bolts. Remove the starter and replace with a new one. Hook up the wires and the battery.
