Hamburger is a type of beef sausage that originated in Hamburg, Germany. It became popular in the U.S. in the 19th century as "Hamburg Steak". Though Hamburger (a proper noun) is a particular mix of ground beef and spices, the English language has evolved to include almost all ground beef under the generic name "hamburger" (lower case). In Addition:The Earle or Hamburg was attending a dinner, Instead of eating the prepared meat with his hands, like the other guests, he asked for two slices of bread to place the meat between to keep his hands clean. Thus the "Hamburger" was born. That might make a good story if it were not for the fact that there has never been an "Earl of Hamburg" and the fact that it is exactly the same apocryphal story cited for the origin of the word "sandwich".
In the early 18th century some Germans noticed during their travels to Asia, that the locals would stuff their beef between their saddles while they would ride, to help soften it for later consumption. The Germans loved the idea of soft seasoned meat, and so they brought the idea back home with them to Hamburg. As time went on, it soon became known as Hamburg Meat. Later when the meat was used in the sandwich we know today, it carried the name of the Hamburger Meat and became the hamburger. The were also once called "Hamburg steak". (Ground meat predates this, of course.)It's thought to have come from the town of Hamburg, Germany. Here is where it's thought hamburger (originally called "hamburger steak") was "invented". The word hamburger first appeared in English in the late 1800's.
