Unhooking the battery cables makes the computer forget all the "keep alive" memory. So it has to relearn. That takes about 10 starts from a cold engine to relearn all that. So it may run weird until it completes the learning process
Remove cables from battery Remove + cable from the starter solenoid Remove the - battery cable from engine ground install new cables using the same routings as original
Loose cables, bad battery, alternator or starter.
Disconnect the battery, remove the cables and boots, and remove the old spark plugs. Put in the new spark plugs, attach the cables and boots, and connect the battery.
Disconnect the battery, remove the spark plug cables and boot covers, and remove the old spark plugs. Next, put in the new spark plugs, reattach the boot covers and spark plug cables and reconnect the battery.

I have an 87 Ranger and it is welded on.
The Power Distribution Box is in the engine compartment , on the drivers side , near the firewall ( if you want to disconnect the power to it you have to remove your battery cables )
