What is a specialized S-works m4 mountain bike frame worth?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

S-Works are the high end bikes produced by Specialized. Its an M4 so I guess its made late 90s or very early 2000s. I would guess it costs about $600 more or less depending on the components and the condition of the bike.

Are you talking about just the frame?

If so I bought one new that was a warranty return the original customer didn't want in 1997 for $495.

What is the Manufacturing process of mountain bike?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

frame tubes are constructed from solid blocks of steel that are pierced and "drawn" into tubes through several stages. These are usually superior to seamed tubes, which are made by drawing flat steel strip stock, wrapping it into a tube, and welding it together along the length of the tube. Seamless tubes may then be further manipulated to increase their strength and decrease their weight by butting, or altering the thickness of the tube walls. Butting involves increasing the thickness of the walls at the joints, or ends of the tube, where the most stress is delivered, and thinning the walls at the center of the tube, where there is relatively little stress. Butted tubing also improves the resiliency of the frame. Butted tubes may be single-butted, with one end thicker; double-butted, with both ends thicker than the center; triple-butted, with different thicknesses at either end; and quad-butted, similar to a triple, but with the center thinning towards the middle. Constant thickness tubes, however, are also appropriate for certain bikes.

The tubes are assembled into a frame by hand-brazing or welding by machine, the former being a more labor-intensive process and therefore more expensive. Composites may be joined with strong glue or plastic binders. The components are generally manufactured by machine and may be attached to the frame by hand or machine. Final adjustments are made by skilled bicycle builders.

Why is mountain biking has become a popular port in the last 20-30 years?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Because it's only been around in a recognizable form for 20 years or so. That's about how long it's been since a group of people started racing bikes down fire breaks and old logging roads, first with stock bikes, then with more and more modified bikes, and eventually with bikes and gear built specifically for the purpose.

What is the mountain bike gear for bmx?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If you want to use your bike to get around with, then a geared bike with bigger wheels is better. It will be faster, less fatiguing and offer greater rider comfort. But if you want to do BMX style riding, with jumps and tricks and that, then a BMX is a better choice.

What is the length of a mountain bike?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It depends on the bike, the size of the frame, number of gears and the size of the sprockets and the chainwheels. In short the chain has to be fitted to the bike, and for that you need a chain breaker tool. Easiest way to get it back together is to use a quick link / master link.www.sheldonbrown, www.parktool.com and www. bicycletutor.com have instructions on how to size your chain, but basically it should be long enough to go round big-big + 2 links.

How do you disassemble a mountain bike?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

That all depends on how far you want to disassemble it, and how it's put together. Department store bikes usually have nutted axles, which means that the wheels come off with a wrench. Cross-country (XC) bikes tend to use quick-release skewers instead. Flick a lever and the wheels come off. Downhill/All-Mountain/Free-ride bikes can have thru-axles, which needs another tool (Allen or torx) to get the wheels out. The handlebar/stem will usually come off with Allen keys. For a bike with a threadless headset, the fork will come out once you have the stem off. Bikes with threaded headsets need two large wrenches to get the fork out. Most of the small parts, like levers and derailers will come off with Allen keys.

Cranks will usually need a crank puller as well as either an Allen key or a socket wrench. Bottom bracket needs a special splined tool to come out.

Where was mountain biking invented?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Mountain biking developed in both Marin County, California and Crested Butte, Colorado (both in the US) in the late 1960's.
Marin County, California, is often held as the birthplace of MTB-ing.
Most credit for the first mountain bikes go to people in northern California, near San Francisco. People used to ride old coaster-brake bikes down long mountain trails, and then they started strengthening them with sturdy parts and components. In the 1980 time frame, framebuilders started making mountain-specific frames. And Specialized had one of the first mass-produced mountain bikes with the StumpJumper.

Today, mountain bikes are designed and built all over the world.

moutain bikes were invented in American mines, miners wanted a quick but smooth way down the hiking tracks.

so they put springs on frames and soon put larger wheels as well.

hope it helped

How to manual a mountain bike?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It is the same technique for all bikes.

- Lean back until your bum is over the rear hub,

- If the front wheel doesn't come up, push your feet into the pedals like you want to flip off the back,

- Once the wheel is up try and keep your weight centered over the rear hub as this is your balance point.

If the wheel comes too high:

- Move your weight forward,

- If you have a rear brake, pull it slightly then let it off when the wheel is lower.

If the wheel drops too low:

- Lean back and push your feet into the pedals.

NB:

- You need to be standing up to do a manual.

- If you do it sitting down and have to pedal to get into it then this is not a manual, it's a Coaster Wheelie.

Can you do an endo on a mountain bike?

Sure, not a problem. Pick a spot with decent traction, then brake hard at the front while remaining in a normal riding position. That should send you over the bar easily.

What is the best size mountain bike wheel to use?

User Avatar

Asked by Flyteke

Strange question. MTB tires are usually 2-and something inch wide, a handle bar will be around 20 inches wide, the rear hub about 6 inches and the saddle is thereabouts too.

What is the average speed of a mountain bike?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There are plenty of different bike types, plenty of different riding terrains and conditions, and plenty of different fitness levels among the riders - so the question really doesn't make much sense. A fit rider on a road bike in flattish terrain can average 20 MPH w/o trouble, while a MTBer on a technically challenging trail might average 8 MPH. You pick which average you think is more fitting.

Closest thing I can think of that you might mean is probably a dirtbike. They're bigger than BMXes but usually have really compact frames making them smaller than regular MTBs.

Have mountain bike tires got more grip than road bike tires?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It all depends. A knobbly tyre will have a poorer grip on a smooth surface than a smooth tyre, while a smooth tyre will have poorer grip on a loose surface than a knobbly tyre.

But overall a smooth-tyred road bike, on a smooth and clean road, can brake and corner harder w/o skidding than a bike with knobbly tires can.

What are mountain bikes tires made of?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Rubber mainly, but also some sort of cloth for reinforcement. They will also have a reinforced edge, where they sit at the rim. This bead as it's called can either be reinforced with steel wire, or a high-tensile textile, usually Kevlar. Tires with Kevlar beads are usually referred to as "foldable" and are lighter and usually more expensive.

Can you use regular bike grips on mountain bikes?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Certainly.

If the old ones are worn out or damaged the easiest way is probably to cut the old ones off. If you have an alloy bar, try not to cut all the way into the metal.

The new ones can then basically be slid on.

You might need something to act as a lube to get them the whole way on.

Some use water, which is always accessible but takes awhile to settle.

Other use hair spray, which also takes some time to settle but acts as a glue once it's dried and really locks the new grips in place.

I prefer compressed air. I push the grip on as far as it goes, then use a basic blow nozzle aimed in between grip and bar. The air will form a layer between grip and bar which'll allow the grip to slide the rest of the way on.

Do note that using compressed air tools is potentially dangerous, so don't use that unless you're aware of what you're doing.

If I haven't got compressed air I use methylated spirits or rubbing alcohol. Pour some in the grip before you slide it on. The alcohol will evaporate faster than water, giving you the opportunity to get back on the bike sooner.

How old do you have to be to ride a mountain bike with a engine?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

As soon as you're old/big enough to be able to ride, you can start to do DH.

If you're real young you might not be able to handle a full-sized, full suspension bike, so you may have to use a BMX or a Dirt bike instead

Trails come in various degrees of difficulty, so start easy and work your way up. If you want to ride at a place where people use ski lifts to get to the top, check with the lift operators. They may have age/size restrictions for who's allowed in the chairs.
