Edgar Allan Poe left the United States Military Academy at West Point because he wanted to focus on his writing and poetry, rather than pursuing a military career. He purposely got court-martialed for neglecting his duties and was ultimately dismissed from the academy.
Edgar Allan Poe briefly attended the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1830. However, he was dismissed after only a year for neglecting his duties and academics. This event marked an important turning point in Poe's life, leading him to pursue a career in writing instead of a military career.
Poe wanted to get a college education in preparation for his career plans, and he got some support from his foster father, John Allan. Allan had sent Poe to the University of Virginia with about one-third the money needed for one year of education. When Poe realized this, he attempted to make-up the difference by gambling resulting in about $2,000 in debts. His foster father not only refused to help pay them, but he also refused to pay for Poe's tuition. Needing a job to pay the debts and not having the tuition forced Poe to leave the University and join the US Army.

While Military Schools are gaining in popularity it may be difficult to find one that would take a teenager with a troubled background. Military Schools work with young people interested in a quality education in a disciplined and structured atmosphere. The family of a teen troubled by social/emotional issues, legal troubles or academic failure may find more help in a program designed just for these issues. http://www.militaryschool.us/

The Boston University website is particularly informative and includes all the entry requirements. The links from the councellor pages are particularly good and include PowerPoint presentations explaining the selective score submissions process. It is a bit of a hunt but well worth it.
Union General Joseph Gilbert Totten graduated from West Point in 1805. He was the 10th cadet to graduate from West Point. He served under the much younger General George B. McClellan in the 1862 Peninsula campaign. He died in 1864, having spent his entire life in the US Army.

The United States Military Academy was built at an existing U.S. Army base - West Point. That's where it got its name. West Point was the first of the American Army bases built after the Declaration of Independence was signed, and Benedict Arnold was its commander. Wikipedia has a post, and a link is provided.

I don't know about the other branches, but the Navy won't even consider you without a High School diploma, regardless of age. Aside from that (if you graduate early) I think the minimum for all branches is 17. The maximum age depends on branch. For Navy, it's 32. I think it's 40 for Army.
