This is irritating, but it's no big deal, Your fuel gauge that sits in the tank is broken or loose, it costs more time and money than it's worth to fix. If you want get the new floater weight that goes in the tank, they're located on the fuel pump itself, but rarely can be found sold seperate. Raise your car off the ground, drop the fuel tank, remove the fuel pump, replace it, or the whole pump, and wala, it hopefully will stop bouncing and swaying all over the place at half a tank. Job usually takes about 3 1/2 to 4 hours and costs $5 to $500 depending if you can get just the floater and who does the work.
The sending unit(float) has failed. The sending unit is attached to the fuel pump module in the fuel tank.
