Different geographical areas changed things for many civilizations. For example the North became an Industrial area due to rivers that provided hydraulic power. The South became an agricultural area because they had long open field and no rivers to make factories.
Human geography has a definite impact on history and current events as well. First, to understand "how" it is necessary to define the term.
Human geography is the study of the areas and organization of human activity and their relationships with the environment. This includes the places and areas a group of people dwell in.
With that said here is an example of how human geography impacts history and even current events.
One example dates back to ancient Rome. Early on in this civilization, the people of Rome found themselves in an area that could produce food and wealth by interacting with their environment, mainly fertile farmlands. Their interactions with other societies was often based on conflicts over control of land. That is a part of their early history.
Later in their history, it should be noted that Rome was not far from the sea via the River Tiber. Ambitious Romans used the river to grant them access to the Mediterranean Sea and some limited trade around a largely small area.
When a conflict with Carthage, a civilization on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, came about, Romes access to the environment of the sea gave them the chance to build ships they would need to wage war with Carthage a sea based power. Had ancient Rome been located in Paris, far away from any major bodies of water, the sea development just described never would have been a factor regarding a conflict with Carthage.
On a more current events example of human geography, we see the situation in the Crimea. Here the human geography of Russia is now intertwined with Ukraine which owned the Crimea. They leased a warm water port there to Russia. It can be debated that the environment of needing a warm water port was dependent on Ukraine. To change history, the Russian Federation annexed Crimea and now owns a fine warm water port on the Black Sea.
Egyptian civilization was built on the banks of the Nile River in Africa. Each year, the Nile flooded.Rich soil was left on the river banks.
