Not sure if you've replaced your rear hatch support yet, they are usually only sold as a pair, you have to buy the entire assembly. May want to check Amazon.com. I have to replace the ones on mine as well, I have a 2000, should be the same ones though. You can buy the pair for the drivers side and passenger side for around 80.00. Sold as a pair. Hope this helps.

One of the primary causes for this is a stretched timing belt. Even though the belt is a notched belt, they do stretch just enough to make the timing not conform to smog specs. I have had this happen, too, and found that a timing belt replacement solved the problem.

In case there's still guarantee on the machine it is strongly suggested to give the corresponding support a call in order to clarify the possible options for a replacement.
