These countries fought each other in two bitter wars, which both also involved many other countries, too: World War 1 (1914-18) and World War 2 (1939-45). In other words, the answer to the question is NO. Even now (2006) there is a lot of anti-German feeling in Britain, oddly enough among people under 35 rather than among older people.

Why were European allies more interested in punishing Germany then creating a lasting peace?

To repay for the damages caused and to create lasting peace by ruining Germany to a point that it no longer had the ability to wage a war.

Why was the Battle of the Bulge so important to Germany?

The importance to the German war effort cannot be understated . Had the German offensive been successful at the Battle of the Bulge then the Germans would have severed the major port of Antwerp , Belgium as a key supply source for the Allies . The capture of Antwerp would have been a significant accomplishment on the part of the German army (Wehrmacht) . The counter offensive, created by Hitler, was not approved by his general staff. They feared they lacked the resources to carry it out. But, having said that, the Germans surprised the Allies and scored victories in the first five days. By January, however, the lack of gasoline for the panzer divisions and other supplies forced a German retreat. Both the Allies & Germany suffered heavy losses, but the Allies could replenish themselves and the Germans could not. The Battle of Bulge was important because it was the last major Nazi attack against the Allies in WW 2 . This battle was a last ditch attempt by Hitler to divide the Allies in two in their drive towards Germany and would have hampered the Allied war against Germany and would have ruined the Allies' ability to supply themselves .

Why D-day success was so vital to an allied victory?

If the Germans had managed to win D-Day it would have been at least 3 more years before the Allies could attack again in such strength.

How did the allies trick Hitler into sending his top tank division to calais prior to d- day?

The Allies tricked Hitler by having a French merchant ship drop a dead body with plans of a fake invasion to take place far west of Normandy and on high tide the body was dropped by the Normandy coast and floated to shore and was found by the Germans and delivered to Hitler and he moved a large group of his men to that point and left the rest at Normandy witch was still a lot of Germans and payed little attention to Normandy. Hitler was taken by surprise and could not move his troops to Normandy and waited still thinking that there was an immanent invasion witch would never come. The Allies lost many men and the number would have been worse if the deception trick did not work. We should always be thankful that there were and still are people like that so willing to fight for what they believe in and to fight for other countries and for the United States of America these men were and will always be Heros.

How did the geography of Normandy help the Germans's defend their position?

they were on a hill, and the allies had to come one by one on boats to get there, and then run uphill on land mined sand beaches, and the Germans had been already dug in for months waiting.

How did the remilitarization of the Rhineland make Hitler appear to Germans?

A hero. The Germans thought they finally had a leader who stood up to the English and French victors of WW 1 who had been humiliating them and bled them dry under the peace treaty of Versailles that had been forced on Germany. The same went by the way for the unification with Austria and the occupation of the Sudetenland and later, the conquest of Poland. You have to remember that Austria itself had asked for this unification in 1919 but that had been refused by the Allies; and the unification by Hitler in '38 had broad support in Austria as well as in Germany. Sudetenland and large pieces of Poland had been part of Germany until 1918 and simply been 'given away' by the Allies to the newly established States of Poland and Czechoslowakia, who then proceeded to chase tens of thousands of Germans out of their homes and jobs.

How would world war 1 have ended if the US had not gotten involved?

The Germans would have won because they were really beating down on the Allies. This was because the Germans had 3 million soldiers because they were recruiting men from the ages of 13-45. So if the US didn't come in at that time to help the Allies, it would have been Germany's victory! :-)

What di the Allies defeating the Germans in the battle of the Marne do?
