The internet is both safe and unsafe. It is only unsafe if you share personal information or download programs from untrusted sites. If you, your children, or your parents talk about the dangerous of the internet and you understand there are risks involved with things done on the internet then the internet is perfectly safe.
Remember, it's better to be safe than sorry.
Tell your children not to share the personal information like address, password, name, phone number etc. Be sure to keep an eye on your kids contacts, you never know who the person pretending to be another kid really is.
Internet shopping is very popular nowdays so be careful with internet payments. Invisible fraudsters can steal your real money if you share your credit card or bank account detail on untrusted websites which pretend to be a shop or something like that. Avoid using a credit card online. Use a prepaid card like paysafecard with online games, Skype etc.
Now that technology is rapidly growing and advancing, so are it's users. Some of these users are hackers, spammers, and virus inflictions. The best way to stay safe on the Web is to never give out personal information (Social security, credit card, email, etc) to sites you have not done business with or do not trust. Also, do not accept 'free gifts' or 'you are the 100th visitor' prizes. Overall, if you have a good security system software, you'll be fine!

You have to be safe on the computer because:
There is actually many different answers to that question, as it can mean many different things. For internet, you can use a CGI proxy, but public CGI's are dangerous if you do not know what you are looking for. You could buy a private proxy that only you can use, but you have to be careful what company you choose, as some will upon request hand over a copy of where you have been going to anyone with a court order. For the computer there are many disk encryption programs such as truecrypt, which can create hidden drives to store your sensitive files. And you can also use programs like Cyberscrub to safely erase deleted files and overwrite the free space on your HD so no one can steal information by going through your deleted files. Hope this helps.
There is not a particular way to be safe on a Windows Computer. Viruses are made every single day and if you visit websites that are not trusted and have a name behind them you are at risk to a virus. The best way to protect yourself is by a Antivirus software.

because you touch yourself at night and in the work toilets

There are no laws or regulations that specifically address the health or safety of using a computer. There are some generally recognized guides. These include guides on how to position the screen, keyboard and chair, how to adjust the lighting and position the screen to control glare, etc.
Some safety precautions n a computer lab would be: do not have trailing wires or cables; do not write down and stick on the PC any username and password combinations; obey health and safety regulations for that lab. It is also important to know where the fire exits are and where the correct fire extinguishers are.

Computer work stations if improperly designed or set up can cause ergonomic stress.
