It sounds like you only have a "valet key" My valet key is green. The main key is black. The valet key will not open the trunk or the glovebox.
If you do not have a main key you should be able to get one from a dealer using the VIN #
NO! It's feckin' easy. Remove plastic on steering column so you can get at the ignition. Watch for the little white and black plastic pieces holding it on. Once you have that off there should be a SMALL hole in the side of your ignition cylinder. Push something in there (small screwdriver, nail punch, whatever) and it should come right out Take it along with your new one to a locksmith if you want it rekeyed. You can start your runner with the cylinder out by using a pair of needle-nose and common sense. I did it in 20 min with a broken leg in Texas heat. ITS EASY.
call a locksmith to have them rekeyed (this means the locks stay the same but the key changes) or buy new ones and try to replace them yourself.
Depending on the year of car you can get a new key for free at a Chrysler dealer with your title and ID. if it has the rf antitheft system built into the key then you will have to pay for the key. it will be much cheaper to by the key from the dealer anyway. This only works if you have never rekeyed your vehicle with a different set of locks. but it will be much cheaper to have the key replaced by the dealer than to have the iginition lock replaced.
Short answer: Maybe. The locks can be changed and rekeyed by switching the order of the lock wafers. This is pretty easily done by just some guy.
This is only "help". I had to have this done by AAA 3 years ago. First disconnect the battery. Then, you have to remove all that platic covering under the dash at that side, remove all the plastic covering the steering column, and there is the "switch", usually two nuts holding it, attached to the column, a plug with all the wires pertaining to "on-off", and a connecting rod to the ignition key up by the steering wheel. Be sure to disconnect the battery to avoid 60amps to your wrench. I hope you weren't asking how to replace the ignition key cylinder. That is simple, but another task. Use a drift pin or nail to push the release pin (inside a 1/8' dia. hole beside the key), release and remove the old cylinder. Usually the key will have to be in the cylinder to remove it. Reverse to install the new key/cylinder. Position is critical in inserting the new cylinder. It must be exactly as the old one. And obviously, the old key will not work, unless you take the new cylinder to a locksmith to be rekeyed to your old key. There is much more to this than can be described here. I recommend that you buy a copy of Haynes repair manual #38010 since it has a pretty good description of the process and some helpful pictures.
Does the key spin continuously in the cylinder? Or does it not fully rotate to the unlocked position? Is it a deadbolt mortise or latch mortise. If the key is spinning continuously the tail piece on the cylinder is broke or has separated from the lock. Replace the cylinder but it will need to be rekeyed or replace the tailpiece if it came off and it is the type that screws on then you don't have to replace the cylinder or have it rekeyed. If there is internal failure in the mortise lockset, especially if it is 10 to 15 years old it should be replaced. This will normally require the services of a locksmith. If your're in Maryland let me know.
According To Both Haynes and Chilton. Take it to a lock smith. It is just as easy to just have the new handle\lock rekeyed to your old key.
Yes. They key is their property, you didn't pay for it. And now since security of the building, safe, whatever is now compromised, they can possibly make you pay to have it rekeyed, especially if you sign a waiver stating those conditions.
call a locksmith it is well worth the 75-150$ they charge. they are tooled for it and do it all the time. if you watch them do the job you will understand. I just had 3 cars rekeyed and it took about an hour this would have taken me 4hours and 2 new tools. The question is How to remove ignition switch,, not Who to call about an ignition switch. I mean come on,, Remove the steering wheel, press the plate, pull the lock ring out, remove 3 Phillips head screws to your turn signal switch. There is one more tiny Phillips screw, this is for the turn signal arm. Just pull the switch up just a little bit to get it off the steering shaft, there is a torques head screw, remove that and the cylinder is out, reverse all the directions to install. Here is a great web site for many makes of vehicle's: http://www.keybitslockandkey.com/losangeleslocksmith/manual/gm/gmlock.htm I'm sure you have already got it, this may help someone else out later on.
If your original key fits into the replacement trunk lock cylinder, it can be rekeyed. The problem with doing this yourself is not having the right parts. An honest locksmith should be happy to do this for less than 30 dollars.Good luck : )
I used this procedure to remove the lock cylinder in order to have the cylinder rekeyed. First, for the sake of safety to the electrical system, DISCONNECT the NEGATIVE TERMINAL CONNECTOR from the battery. This should be done any time you are working on, or close to, any electrical system, UNLESS it is absolutely necessry to have power on for testing. There is an ACCESS HOLE on the right side of the steering column, just beneath the ignition lock cylinder. 1. Turn the key forward to the "ON" position [but DO NOT start the engine]. 2. Insert a flat ended probe, or rod, into that hole, and press inward on the LOCK RETAINER spring clip to release it from the cylinder. I used one of those screwdrivers with a flat ended "star shaped" tip, but I think a Phillips might work. Actually, any flat ended rod will work, and a small "DRIFT" is ideal. 3. Place a piece of tape [like masking or electrician's tape] on the steering column as an ""index" to help you remember the precise rotational position of the cylinder, to facilitate replacing the cylinder. 4. While maintaining the release pressure on the retainer with your "tool," and using the key as a handle, pull the cylinder out.
According to SOWPODS (the combination of Scrabble dictionaries used around the world) there are 3 words with the pattern R--EY--. That is, seven letter words with 1st letter R and 4th letter E and 5th letter Y. In alphabetical order, they are: redeyes rekeyed reneyed
