Life in the Roman time was all about church. The Romans were Roman Catholic, and went to church for religious reasons and for educational purposes. The church was also a school, either called a monistary for men, or a covent for woman. This was a great place for religious and educational studies. The Romans also had a type of Caste System, call a Feudal System. This system went like this:

-Kings (owned the land)

-Lords (helped to own the land)

-Knights (worked for the king and protected the land)

-Serfs (worked the land; last person in the feudal system)

Mass movement to the cities?

If you mean when did the people started to mass move to big cities for getting better paid and getting a better life, I think then that you should go back to the 1st century in the Roman Empire. Lot's of Roman citizens went to Rome to get a better life and find better work. I don't think mass movement happened earlier than in the Roman Empire. Also by the late centuries of the West Roman Empire around 410 lot's of Visigoths, Vandals, Germans went to the Roman Empire, eventually the Empire actually fell because of their mass movement.
