Endometriosis is the abnormal growth of cells (endometrial cells) similar to those that form the inside of the uterus, but in a location outside of the uterus. Endometrial cells are cells that are shed each month during menstruation. The cells of endometriosis attach themselves to tissue outside the uterus and are called endometriosis implants. These implants are most commonly found on the ovaries, the Fallopian tubes, outer surfaces of the uterus or intestines, and on the surface lining of the pelvic cavity. They can also be found in the vagina, cervix, and bladder, although less commonly than other locations in the pelvis. Rarely, endometriosis implants can occur outside the pelvis, on the liver, in old surgery scars, and even in or around the lung or brain. Endometrial implants, while they can cause problems, are benign (not cancerous).

Most people will choose to do a surgery to get cured , but , that will leave a scar or the patients will suffer from a lot of pain , the the herbal med Fuyan pill is a very good med , this medicine has applied for a patent. "Fuyan pill" has the function to clear away heat and toxic material. After three months' treatment , all the symptoms can be cleared up and the patients can be pregant after their radical treatment .

Women who do not wish to become pregnant and do not have severe symptoms do not need treatment . There are a few treatment options for endometriosis but it is quite complicated because it is still unknown what actually causes endometriosis. One option for treatment is just simply observation with no prescription. The only medication necessary would be something as simple as Tylenol or Advil. A second option is hormonal treatments. These hormonal supplements cause the females body to develop eggs and produce estrogen which should result in a normal menstrual cycle. The third and last option is surgery. The woman can choose to have corrective surgery in which the lesions or ovarian cysts would be removed or she can choose to have a total hysterectomy. If the woman does choose to have a hysterectomy, she is generally prescribed a birth control hat will shrink the lesions and ease the overall process. While some women may find relief after menopause, most do not because the ovaries continue to make small amounts of estrogen which continues to aggravate her endometriosis. Some women may resort to having their ovaries removed, also known as "surgical menopause." An ovariectomy does not always solve the problem 100% though because ovarian tissue remains in the pelvis; it can also increase the females risk of Heart disease and osteoporosis. The disadvantage to taking medications that lower estrogen levels it that it also heightens your risk for osteoporosis Most doctors recommend that a women who undergoes surgical menopause, should take hormone therapy to avoid those risks . Every time a woman conceives a child, her risks of endometriosis decreases as well as with taking an oral contraceptive. One study showed that a twenty-eight year old female who was suffering from incapacitating symptoms of endometriosis. This woman had a high glycemic index diet with little protein. Her doctor changed her diet dramatically and she began including fish in her diet on a regular basis as well as small amounts of red meat, nuts, yogurt, fruit, vegetables, dried fruit and rye bread. Two months after her diet change, she noticed significant results. Her periods shortened from 17 days to five days. Her pain was also reduced greatly as well. She still suffered moderate pain but it was manageable without having to use painkillers. She noticed an increase in energy and a decrease for cravings of sweets. Because of this lifestyle change in eating habits, she was able to avoid having an operation to help her endometriosis .

One option for treatment is just simply observation with no prescription. The only medication necessary would be something as simple as Tylenol or Advil.

A second option is hormonal treatments. Birth Control pills cause the female body to produce estrogen which should result in a normal menstrual cycle. Another hormonal treatment option is the use of GnRH antagonists, such as Lupron, which basically throws the woman into a pseudo-menopause. It works since the woman's body no longer produces any hormones and thus there is no estrogen (a suspect in causing endometriosis flare-ups) being produced during menopause (or pseudo-menopause), thus relieving many of the endometriosis symptoms. After beginning Lupron treatments, "add back therapy" is necessary to offset any side effects of the GnRH by "adding back" small amounts of hormones, such as a prescription of Angelique. Why "add back" small amounts of the hormones when we know it is causing so many of the endometriosis symptoms? Chances are, the amount being added back is not nearly enough to bring back the symptoms a woman had before starting GnRH treatment options, but is just enough to offset any side effects of it. Not all women respond well to GnRH treatment options, and there are also serious side effects to it (such as quick and early loss of bone density - which repairs itself once the patient ends Lupron treatment).

The third and last option is surgery. The woman can choose to have corrective surgery in which the lesions or ovarian cysts would be removed, although depending on the placement or depth of the lesions, some may not be removable at all. Or she can choose to have a total hysterectomy. If the woman does choose to have a hysterectomy, she is generally prescribed a birth control that will shrink the lesions and ease the overall process. A hysterectomy, however, is generally useless if any endometrial lesions remain after the hysterectomy is performed - these lesions must also be removed.

It also may not solve the problem as all endometrial implants must be removed entirely. If any are left behind, symptoms may still occur.

There is currently no cure for all girls and women with endometriosis. There are a number of treatments available. They include surgery to remove the endo, pain medications, drugs that affect the hormonal system, herbal medicine of Fuyan Pill, and hysterectomy. Often a doctor will start with painkillers and the Pill. It is important to find the right doctor for you.

The Endometriosis Assocation can help. Their website is EndometriosisAssn.org. The book, Endometriosis: The Complete Reference for Taking Charge of Your Health, by Mary Lou Ballweg, is also a great resource.

Endometriosis cannot be prevented. This is in part because the cause is poorly understood. But long-term use of birth control hormones (patch, pills, or ring) may prevent endometriosis from becoming worse.

The cause of endometriosis is unknown. One theory is that the endometrial tissue is deposited in unusual locations by the backing up of menstrual flow into the Fallopian tubes and the pelvic and abdominal cavity during menstruation (termed retrograde menstruation). The cause of retrograde menstruation is not clearly understood. But retrograde menstruation cannot be the sole cause of endometriosis. Many women have retrograde menstruation in varying degrees, yet not all of them develop endometriosis.

So , to heal endometriosis , killing the bacteria and clear away the menstrual flow are very important , the Fuyan pill is a very good drug to cure endometriosis , you can have a try .

There is no proven way to prevent endometriosis. One study, however, indicated that girls who begin participating in aerobic exercise at a young age are less likely to develop the condition.

If you are a 65 year old woman with endometriosis what is the best treatment plan and what side effects does it entitle?

If the woman is 65, she has had endometriosis for decades. At 65, she would be post menopausal. Endometriosis symptoms flare up with normal monthly cycles in women. If she no longer has normal cycles - and at 65 she shouldn't - why do anything at all? The time to treat endometriosis has passed by that age.

Can endometriosis sufferers bleed during pregnancy?

How old can you be to get endometriosis?

I'm pretty certain any female who has their period can get endometriosis. "Endometriosis can affect any woman, from premenarche to postmenopause, regardless of her race or ethnicity or whether or not she has had children" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endometriosis) If you do think you have it, go see your doctor and they might be able to help you find ways to treat it without having to go to a gynocologist (if you feel you are too young). I think I may have endometriosis , but I'm waiting til I'm 18 to see the gyno so I can work up the courage! But definitely go to the doctor if you have period pain, because they should be able to help with the pain a little bit, if not completely :)

Does endometriosis smell?

Endometriosis does not necessarily have an odor, or at least not one that you would be able to detect, since endometriosis is inside of you. If you are experiencing vaginal odor, it is most likely not endometriosis, and you should visit your OB GYN with your concerns.

Could you have endometriosis if you already have a child?

Yes. Having a child does not protect you from endometriosis. While having endometriosis often makes becoming pregnant difficult for women, becoming pregnant will also reduce the symptoms of endometriosis. So, being diagnosed with endometriosis after having a child makes it rather difficult for your doctor to determine whether you had endometriosis prior to the pregnancy or if it became an issue post-pregnancy - especially if you were positively diagnosed with endometriosis shortly after giving birth.

Do you have periods if you have endometriosis?

All women are different. Some women with endometriosis will not have regular periods. However, there are also women with endometriosis that either have irregular periods, or even those that have very regular periods. If you think you may have endometriosis, see your OB GYN.
