Can birth control help endometriosis?

Yes. Most hormonal birth control stops the body from ovulating by "tricking" it into thinking that you are pregnant. The lower level of estrogen during pregnancy is mimicked by birth control and can help control endometriosis. Many providers will prescribe the pill and recommend skipping the week of placebo pills, thereby skipping a period completely, or will recommend the birth control implant or Mirena IUD to serve the same purpose. If you are on back-to-back birth control like this, make sure to take periodic pregnancy tests just in case, since you will not have the symptom of a missed period to signal a possible pregnancy.

Is complete numbness and skin burning feeling in upper thigh normal 1 week after having diagnostic laparoscopy with removal of a lot of endometriosis or is it possible that you have nerve damage?

I had the same surgery ten years ago and there are still areas on my right thigh (surface) that have no feeling. My mom had similar results after her hysterectomy. Nerve damage is what I was told.

You have Endometriosis and your doctor gives you lortabs for pain medication Is this normal?

One of the most common symptoms women feel with endometriosis is pain, light or severe. Lortab is a common drug used to manage pain. This is normal, however, keep in mind that Lortab is a scheduled substance and is an addictive medication, physically and mentally. Caution should be used when taking this medication. If you have concerns about it, consult your prescribing doctor.

What is endometriosis?

Endometrial tissue lines the uterus. Each month, in tune with the menstrual cycle, the endometrial tissue thickens and is shed during menstruation.

If you have endometriosis, it means that the same kind of tissue that lines your uterus is also growing in other parts of your body, usually in the abdomen. This can cause scar tissue to build up around your organs.

Endometriosis may cause severe pain and abnormal bleeding, usually around the time of your period. Pain during intercourse is another common symptom. However, it is possible to have endometriosis and not have any symptoms.

Endometriosis is a leading cause of infertility(inability to get pregnant). Often it is not diagnosed until a woman has trouble getting pregnant.

Dilation and Curettage

If you have endometriosis and have just miscarried at seven-and-a-half weeks should you get a DNC done to make sure it does not cause any problems?

D & C stands for Dilatation and Curettage, which is a dilation of the cervix and cleaning out of the uterus. Most miscarriages do not need a D & C done afterwards, and having endometriosis has nothing to do with it. You only need a D & C after a miscarriage if you continue to bleed or cramp, indicating there is still part of the pregnancy that needs to be removed.

I am very sorry for your loss, but don't give up hope! Endrometriosis is common and I've had it (very badly in my 30s) and found out it left scarring. It would be wise to have your doctor send you to a specialist. Scarring can be removed if the specialist feels this is what is needed so you can get pregnant.

How painful is endometriosis?

The level of pain varies among women, and surpisingly enough, is not necessarily related to how bad the endo is (i.e. the extent or size of the growths). The pain can be described as "killer cramps" during your period, or it can be completely disabling 24/7 and cause fainting or vomiting.

Treatment options include pain relievers, hormones, herbal medicine of Fuyan Pill and surgery.

Please get in touch with the Endometriosis Assocation at endometriosisassn.org or take a look at the book, Endometriosis, by Mary Lou Ballweg for more information.

Is it possible to have endometriosis without a uterus?

Yes. Because the migration of uterine tissue to other parts of the body is a slow process, and it is possible that the endometriosis started forming before the uterus was removed during hysterectomy.

What are the chances you will become pregnant if you have endometriosis?

I have endometriosis and the doctors have told me that until a fertility test is taken you wont be able to know if you are or are not able to have children. However, they also mentioned that it will be more difficult to become pregnant. I have met several women who have endometriosis who got pregnant just fine. Getting pregnant and having endometriosis is based solely upon your individual genetic make-up.

AnswerIt really depends on the extent of the Endometriosis. I am assuming that you were diagnosed through laparoscopy, which is the only true way of diagnosing Endometriosis. Therefore, you should ask the physician that performed the procedure exactly where the endometrial implants are located. If they are in the fallopian tubes or ovaries, there is usually too much scar tissue for an egg or sperm to travel through and result in pregnancy.

Many women though, have been known to become pregnant with Endometriosis and have said that the disease virtually disappears or lessens after pregnancy due to not menstruating for 9 or more months. Check with your Dr, if you have insurance, the endometrial implants can often be removed with laser and covered by your plan.

*****Don't give up home thogh cause I had a laparoscopy and was diagnosed with Endometriosis last summer 2010 that covered all of my organs from my servix all the way up to and including my liver, my tubes and ovaries weres severely scared as well as many of my organs and in November 2010 just after my birthday I found out I was pregnant and medically speaking it wasn't possible, but it happened. and now I have a two and a half month old son who is perfectly healthy and we couldn't be happier. As for the fertility tests they were all negative and i took them as instructed to the T as well as fertility medication. Eventually I quit worrying and stoped the meds and the tests and just went on with my life not just mentally but deep down.... and as I said previously wonderful blessing of a son was still the result for me.--Stevie1989

Can endometriosis cause period pains?

Yes. In endometriosis the tissue begins to grow in places outside, as well as inside, the uterus. When the tissue begins to slough off during the monthly cycle it can cause pain or discomfort wherever it is located. Over time the length of pain tends to increase and can last for weeks.

What are the signs and symptoms for endometriosis?

I don't believe there is something that you can paint on to repair the umbrella. If it has a tear, you can glue it. If it has a hole, you can use a canvas patch kit to repair the hole. You should stitch or iron the patch over the hole according to the instructions.

How is endometriosis diagnosed?

Endometriosis is only positively diagnosed via laprascopic surgery.

Endometriosis - even Stage 4 - is not viewed by any visual test - ultrasound, MRI, CT, etc. It also is not found by any laboratory testing - urine, blood, etc.

Suspicions of endometriosis by your doctor will arise from a combination of symptoms you may be having and how long you have been having them, such as:

* Fatigue * Painful cramping

* Painful sexual intercourse

* Pelvic pain, both during menstruation and other times of your cycle * Abnormal menstrual cycle

* Abnormal menstruation Your doctor may attempt some of these tests, laboratory and visual, to rule out any other possible causes, but only a laprascopic "exploratory" surgery will positively diagnose you (meaning, he can put it on paper and sign off on the diagnosis).
