If you look by your ashtray you will find a switch just hit that but for safety reasons ( to make sure no one is in there you might want to leave on )
Break lights come on when you step on the break, they do not come on when the head lights are turned on.
There should be a knob somewhere on the dashboard which controls the panel lights. Try turning this knob clockwise. Your dash lights may be turned all the way down, and only come on when the doors have been opened.
Check all your grounds. Battery to block and your headlight sockets.

In the back should be tail lights which always come on when the headlights or parking lights are on, and stoplights which come on whenever the brakes are pressed. The stoplights should be brighter than the tail lights, but they should be separate.

the dash and radio lights are supposed to dim when the headlights come on. Make sure you have the brightness of the dash lights turned up as much as possible.
I had this happen to me. It turned out to be a corroded earth terminal.

It is normal if other lights come on at the same time. All of the reminder/warning lights should come on when ignition is in idle (key's in ignition, but the car is not running)
On a toyota tacoma 2003 SR5 when the tail lights are turned on the brake lights come on and when the tail lights are of the brake lights work just fine what could be the problem. If the truck has a trailer plug, inspect the plug and plug wiring for damage and corrosion.
