Practice. Practicing or training is the way to improve anything. It is the same with fitness exercise. Start slowly, slightly increase what you do at each training session, and give yourself sufficient recovery time between training sessions. Before starting any exercise program, please get the blessing of your physician in advance.
If you have been doing nothing at all, try walking every other day. At each walk, just walk a bit farther until you are walking for four miles nonstop. Then, instead of increasing your distance, just decrease your time slightly until you are walking four miles every other day in between 56 minutes and one hour. You may then go on to a jogging or running program. Do it the same way: start slowly and work a bit harder each time. For more information about cardio exercise, including cardio walking, see the page links, further down this page, listed under Related Questions.
You may use any exercise that increases your heart rate and sustains that increase for a relatively long period of time. Brisk walking, jogging, running, cycling, and cross-country skiing are just a few of the more popular methods to use. Start slowly and work progressively.
