There were a number of factors that caused the Chinese Civil War. However, on August 1, 1927, activists from the Communist Party of China revolted against the Nationalist government. This is generally seen as the beginning of the Civil War.

China has had numerous civil wars. The most recent involved the Nationalists vs. Communists (and sometimes neighboring countries like Japan and Russia plus colonial powers from Europe).

This conflict started in the 1920s with a small, localized Communist movement that received support from the newly created Soviet Union. For several years the Communist faction was beaten back into a single province but always came back. The Russians withdrew support when their advice was no longer accepted by the Communists.

The widespread poverty and chaos of the Japanese invasion in the 1930s and 1940s allowed the Communist movement to spread from one southern province to widespread acceptance throughout the mountainous north of the country. After the Japanese withdrew at the end of WW2, the Communists began a full assault on the Nationalists, who were then driven back to the island of Taiwan.

In medieval times, China wasn't China, it was actually many different "nations" that were at war with each other for power. Eventually, the QIN dynasty was captured, and that unified all of China.

China was technically China (under one emperor) but all the warlords wanted their own power and had wars with each other.
