This conflict started in the 1920s with a small, localized Communist movement that received support from the newly created Soviet Union. The widespread poverty and chaos of the Japanese invasion in the 1930s and 1940s allowed the Communist movement to spread from one southern province to widespread acceptance throughout the mountainous north of the country. After the Japanese withdrew at the end of WW2, the Communists began a full assault on the Nationalists, who were then driven back to the island of Taiwan.
