Okay. Prepare yourself for the long answer.

After World War One with the 'defeat' of Germany (The war ended with an Armstice so technically no one won.), the Allies devised a Treaty called the Treaty of Versailles (Ver-sai). Amongst other things, it took away foreign lands from Germany. This meant that income in Germany was very low. With the Depression, Germany sank even lower into debt. The government started to print more money but it soon became worthless. A loaf of bread could cost over a billion Deutsch Marks.

Germany was on the state of collapse when the National-Socialist party or Nazi party, lead by Adolph Hitler, took power. Hitler said that he would cut debt and he did. Germany was back on track. To further increase income, Hitler re-took the lands removed in the Treaty of Versailles. The League of Nations (Basically the UN but with no military force) ignored him. They were German lands after all. But when he invaded Czechoslovakia, this was classed as the invasion of a foreign country but still the League of Nations ignored him. They could do nothing to stop him.

It was not until they invaded Poland-an Ally of Britain that war was declared. By this time, the German army was too powerful and Hitler conquered all of Europe. In fact, if Hitler had not made the grave mistake of invading the Soviet Union, it is likely that Germany would have won the war.
