Britain started colonizing in the garb of trade. East India and West India trading companies gained access to markets and later on through astute politics and by benefiting from internal discord started colonizing.

It began with sending criminals to America to clear the jails, and when this was closed by the American revolution, other locations were selected. The other avenue was by establishing trading stations, mainly by the East India Company, which in time expanded and took control. Australia was occupied initially as a base to counter French expansion in the eastern Indian ocean and then became a place to take the overcrowded prisons in England.
