Most of the people that came to Jamestown were single men looking for quick riches (i.e. gold mining). When they first arrived they did not concentrate on planting crops as they should have but focused on looking for gold and silver, hoping to re-create the Spanish success in the New World. When their search turned up nothing, they were low on food which meant they could not fight off diseases very well. malaria was the big killer of the first settlers. They also did not have good relations with theNative Americans

in the area, and had to fight off constant attacks from the Natives. Tobacco farming of a tobacco plant from Bermuda or the Bahamas byJohn Rolfe

provided the income that the Virginia Company needed to guarantee the continued investment in theJamestown settlement
