It wasn't alliances that lead to the outbreak, per se, though it was somewhat familiar. WW1 begun by a Duke being shot in an assassination by a Serbian. This started conflict, and then, countries started to 'take sides' I guess you could say. This then annoyed the opposition and then made them want to build their armies.
alliances lead to war because if one country gets into a hostile situation with Another Country its allies are obligated to back it up.
When one country got into an argument with another country, every ally of those countries would automatically be involved, thus leading to the war.
Because the country making the alliance backs up its friend. Case in point with the US and Taiwan. In other words if somebody picks on them they mess with us also.
