The policy of appeasement was a contributing factor to the outbreak of World War II because it was used against an opponent(Hitler) whose immediate goals included domination of Europe. Any act of appeasement stood little chance of satisfying him . He would always want more. As a matter of fact certain acts of appeasement did infuriate him such as when it delayed his acquiring Czechoslovakia. Once France and England came to the realization that Hitler could not be negotiated with they drew the line in the sand (guaranteeing Poland's sovereignty) that kicked of WWII. Most likely if they had acted decisively 2-3 years earlier they could have stopped Hitler without the risk of a long and costly war. Appeasment, a method used by Neville Chamberlain to make Hitler happy did not exactally cause the war. Hitler probably would have attacked Czechoslavakia if Chamberlain had not used a policy of appeasment. However, if Chamberlain had not the war would have been a lot shorter as Britain and France could have easily crused Hitler at the time. It was their inactiveity in face of battle that made WWII extremely difficult to win. Hi Sarah How could appeasement ever cause a war? Lets say ten states live together on a continent and everyone is appeasing eachother. How do you see a war there? Faith in military solutions to differences in opinion, belief that might is right, blind patriotism and aggressive foreign policies caused the war. Appeasement failed to prevent Britian from becoming engulfed in the war. Cheerio Tommy I don't think "cause" is the right word. World War II was caused by German aggression. But the policy of appeasement certainly did help bring the war about. If France and Britain had stood up to Germany when when Hitler did not have the strength to back up his threats, they might have forced him to back down without a fight or defeated Germany in a much shorter, less destructive war. Instead they kept giving him what he wanted, hoping to appease him, and Germany got stronger and stronger until defeating her required a fantastic war. Michael Montagne The policy of appeasement was not necessarily the primary reason for WWII. Although, appeasement was a major contributing factor. Great Britain and France both implemented the policy of appeasement toward Nazi Germany because Europe was afraid of war at this moment. Europe had experienced WWI and the Depression. Appeasement worked because it temporarily averted war during hostile tensions. Another words it kept Hitler happy. Appeasement gave Hitler an apparently effortless triumphal march through the 1930s; it emboldened him and clouded his jugdement, but it didn't cause WW2.
Throughout history, when one side decides to appease the other side, it can be risky. For example, many historians believe British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain's efforts to appease Adolph Hitler, by allowing the take over of Poland, not only did not prevent war-- it made the situation worse, by giving Hitler the idea that Chamberlain was a pushover. There is always a debate about whether to be "tough" or whether to compromise. In some cases, compromise can work, but in the case of Chamberlain versus Hitler, compromise (by appeasing him, in the hope that he would not seize additional territory) proved to be a disaster.
Appeasement led to the outbreak of World War II mainly by giving the aggressor-nation, Germany, the confidence that it could act without fear of retribution. Its ultimatum to Poland in 1939 was powerfully motivated by this confidence, although in fact it was this action that finally led to the end of appeasement -- and war.
The policy of appeasement went a long way towards starting World War II. Appeasement meant that Britain basically let Hitler take back lands confiscated from Germany following World War I. Then, when he was about to take Poland, Britain realized that he had gone too far, and the war started.
Adolf Hitler wanted to unite all German people. There was a region in Chzechoslovakia called the Sudentenland. Hitler demanded the lands from Chzechoslovakia and when the Chzechs refused, Hitler threated war. In 1938, Neville Chamberlain(British prime minister) organized the Munich Conference to come to a peaceful solution about the Sudentenland. The Sudentenland was given to Germany and in return, Hitler promised not to demand more land(appeasment) . Hitler lied. By March of 1939, Hitler occupied all of Chzechoslovakia and began demanding land from Poland. On September 1, 1939, Hitler's troops rushed into Poland, begining WWII.
While the English Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain was hailed as a "keeper of the peace" by many, his inaction against Nazi Germany after the annexation of the Sudetenland (in Czechoslovakia) and the Anschluss (annex. of Austria) could be argued to have been foolish. Germany was quite weak early on, and an organized battle with the League of Nations could have fairly easily returned order Europe. Does this answer your question?
Answer no 2
The british and french appeased hitler for a number of reasons
1. They were not ready for any sort of battle
2. Their own economic problems were of higher priority
3. Many thought that the treaty of versailles was unfair and hitler was right to challenge it
4. They knew that the USA would not support them if they challenged hitler
5. Hitler was a barrier from the communism of the west and they were more scared of communism than they were of fascism
6. They did not want to repeat the horrors that was the first world war
This policy failed as a method of peace keeping for a number of reasons
1. It encouraged hitler to be more aggressive, because he thought that they wouldn't try to stop him. This eventually lead to the outbreak of war, because by invading poland, hitler did not actually expect war. He was expecting more appeasment
2. It allowed hitler to become to strong. If the british and french had enforced the treaty of versailles properly, hitler would not have been able to expand his army and when he entered the rhur (his first appeased act of aggression) they could have stopped him easily
3. The USSR got scared by the lack of support from the british and french and thought that if hitler invaded (which he openly intended to) they would not help. For this reason, the USSR joined on the side of the Nazis and this made Hitler confident about war
Appeasement didn't necessaraliy lead to World War 1. The spark that caused it's outbreak was the assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. One of the things that made it a world was was a pre estanblished alliance system in Europe.

Neville Chamberalin's policy of appeasement did not stop the Nazis from attacking France or the UK. It did postpone the timing of the Blitz. It helped the Britons to build up their military and planes and other armament. It did not help him. He was sick and died early in the wartime.
