∙ 13y agoThe Byzantine Empire aka The East Roman Empire aka Romania was the east portion of the Roman Empire. Although the borders of the East Roman Empire were fluctuating during history, its territory consisted (approximately) from what is today Serbia, Albania, Greece (west border), Bulgaria (north border), Turkey Syria, Lebanon, Israel (east border) and Egypt (south border). So basically the Byzantine empire inherited the eastern half of the Mediterranean Sea (Cyprus included). While Latin continued to be the dominant language of the west part, Greek was the dominant language of the east part.
The name "Byzantine" comes from the name of its capital (the same as for the "true" roman empire) which was a former greek colony, called Byzantium. Later on the city name was changed to Constantinopolis (which means "the city of Constantine" in greek) after the name of Constantine the great, one of the most glorious east roman emperors.
Notice that the distinction between the Roman and the Byzantine Empire is a modern convention (they were consider themselves as Roman Empire).

Byzantine Empire is a term which has been coined by historians to indicate the eastern part of the Roman Empire after the fall of the western part. The Romans did not use this term, they called it Roman Empire or Romania (this referred to this empire and not the country which was later called Romania).
The term Byzantine is derived from Byzantium, the Greek city which was redeveloped, turned into the imperial capital of the eastern part of the Roman Empire and renamed Constantinople by the emperor Constantine the Great in 330. It is used to indicate the fact that not long after the fall of the west, this empire became centred on Greece and Greek in character after it lost most of its non-Greek territories. Greek replaced Latin as the official language of this empire in 620, some 150 years after the fall of the west.
