The Archduke was the heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He was murdered by a Bosnian man who was assisted by a group called the Black Hand. The Black Hand had a lot of members who were involved in the government and military of Serbia, Austria-Hungary's neighbor. Austria-Hungary gave Serbia a list of demands, and when Serbia would not comply with them all, Austria-Hungary declared war on them (despite Germany and Russia having negotiations to try to avoid war).
This set off the following chain of events:
Because Germany didn't like the Archduke's haircut.
The assassination of Franz Ferdinand June 28th, 1914, in Sarajevo, resulted in Austria-Hungary's declaration of war against Serbia, eventually culminating in WWI.
The Black Hand was the name of the group of men that conspired to murder Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife. This assassination triggered the political crisis that resulted in World War I.
The assassination of Archduke Francis Ferinand and his wife.
The Great War (later known as World War 1).
The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary by a Serbian nationalist in 1914 led to a chain of events that ultimately resulted in World War I. The war escalated and involved numerous countries, including the King's own country, leading to the disruption and ruin of plans for both the Duke and the King.
The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand is the spark that began the chain events that resulted in World War 1. However, tensions, alliances, and arms races made a large scale war almost inevitable regardless of the spark that ignited it.
The assassination on 28 June 1914 of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, was the proximate trigger of the war. Long-term causes, such as imperialistic foreign policies of the great powers of Europe, including the German Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Ottoman Empire, the Russian Empire, the British Empire, France, and Italy, played a major role. Ferdinand's assassination by a Yugoslav nationalist resulted in a Habsburg ultimatum against the Kingdom of Serbia. Several alliances formed over the past decades were invoked, so within weeks the major powers were at war; via their colonies, the conflict soon spread around the world.
His death resulted in WW1.
