Unfortunately, I am stuck with the same problem. I went to the dealer who allowed me to peek at the schematic of the gas door activator. However, when I asked the service manager if I could do this myself, he called a technician who told him it is a tricky repair. In other words, they would rather I pay them untold sums of money to install this $36.00 part.

Well, This is Not Really Correct. All You Need To Do Is Open The Trunk, Pull Off The Hard Plastic Cover With The Crome Strip On It Near The Trunk Latch, Then On The Passenger' Side Of The Trunk Pull Off The Molded Fabric Just From The Rear Near The Tail Light Not The Whole Thing Because If You Do You Will Have To Remove A Metal Hook And This Is Not Required, Then You Will See The Actuator, It Is White With 2 Philips Screws Holding It To A Metal Bracket. Loosen The Screws And Now The Body Of The Actuator Is Free But Wait! The Plunger Is Still Attatched To The Car! Well, If You Look ath The End Of The Actuator You'll See A Metal Shaft Bent Like The Letter "U" At The End Where It Is Inserted In TRhe Round Plunger. Just Line The Bottom Of The "U" With The Slit In The Plastic Clip, Tilt The Actuator Up, Once The Metal Rod Has Come Out Of The Plastic Clip Just Simply Push The End Of The "U" That Is Still In The Plastic Clip Out And You're Done! To Install Simply Repeat This In Reverse. If You Have Any Questions Just Send Me An E-mail At franktreese@Yahoo.com.

I have a VW Jetta 1.8t with the tiptronic transmission and it cost about $3500 to have rebuilt. I was bummed, but these transmissions are notorious for failing.
